There used to be a bar in BR on the backside of the Bon Marche Mall called 2001 (so futuristic). On this night in 1983, Cheap Trick played a damn killer show. Cheap Trick was always such an awesome live band I was lucky enough to see a few times. Rick Nielsen was a very entertaining guitarist and Robin Zander could really work the crowd. The drummer had these huge arse drum sticks that looked like baseball bats. What a great night in a small venue 38 years ago. I think the Club 2001 eventually became the dance club called The Zoo many years later.

No, but I caught some hand cuffs for passing a doobie to an under cover cop.

I was there. I most remember Rick Nielsen throwing his guitar up several times at the end, purposely trying to knock out the ceiling tiles over the stage.

in 2015 we renovated a large vacant suite in bon carre (former bon marche) that had been sealed off from the rest of the complex for decades. we converted it into a large open call center for an insurance company, which required all new HVAC and other building systems. there was this huge structural deck inside that was supported by a block wall that all had to come out, when i climbed up there with a flashlight i saw what it was...the DJ booth from 2001.

there was all kinds of shite up there...posters, albums, and other paraphernalia from the club. pretty cool memory, i remember it more as a disco

That space was named 2001 during two different eras. It also went by "3D" and "Xces" at other times.

The Xces era was when they redid the lighting equipment to provide a highly drug-friendly experience for their target clientele of MDMA gobblers dancing to the "X-music" of the time. It was an after hours club with no alcohol, somewhat intended to cut into the Kingfish's business.

I actually DJ’d there for a short time in 1983. Owner was Joe Citrano. He ended up going to jail.

I do not remember "Xces", I do remember exactly what you described as "The Zoo". I was an, um, active participant at the Kingfish and other such establishments.

There was a transition from the Xces period where the music was more geared toward alt/industrial music (re: Front 242, NIN, New Order, Depeche Mode, etc. and the more poppy derivatives) to when it was renamed The Zoo, by which time that scene was almost exclusively Miami bass and orchestra strike stuff (Stevie B, Trinere, Timmy T, Johnny O, etc.).

Very nice post, great description! There was a very cool Alt/Industrial music venue around that time on Nicholson called TTRAX (sp). Good DJ there.

Bun E. Carlos. One of the most underrated drummers in rock. His intro to Ain't That a Shame on the Budokan album is one of the best drum intros ever.

I was there too. 3D was the name of the club at the time I think.

Also saw Head East there. 1982'ish I think.
