Winwood has been a rock star for so long and was one so young - you know he's only 66 and he's been a rock star for over 50 years.
I like Option 1, because I always thought that song was more of a "English Blues" song than a slow rock song.

Much like Prince and Paul McCartney, he can play literally anything that makes music. He was the key member of 2 big name British Bands (SDG and Traffic) and a co-equal with Clapton in Blind Faith. Probably an underrated talent.
Not a lot of kids get to go on the road with a rock band at 14, unless other, older members of their family are in said band. Not Winwood.

I feel like he never gets the credit he deserves for being one of the greatest pure musicians of the last century. I think I also lean more towards 1 because it's a better showcase of his talents

Well, you just can't go wrong with either one. I lean towards the Crossroads version because of the fact that it was Clapton & Winwood playing together for the first time in decades. It's really Winwood's song though and the solo version is much more intimate.

#1 - Good listen thanks!
Option #1 is raw and badars!! I even like the Fire popping.
Option #2 - Too many guitars (stepping on each other) and poor Derek Trucks has to hold back with his slide the whole time.
