what is a joke?

country music in 2014 is better than it's been in 30 years

it's just on the radio

No the only good country is Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Everything else is about these three things
Girls
Alcohol (mostly beer)
Trucks

in your opinion... which is clearly very open minded and has listened to a LOT of non-mainstream country music

There has always been great country music being made in every decade...

The 90s would have you believe that Garth Brooks and his ilk were the only ones making country music... made you wanna puke, right??? because it was garbage..

Meanwhile, there was a vibrant underground scene brewing that was inspired by the classics, punk rock... the burritos, gram, byrds, lone justice, X, silos, etc.. that would lead to the movement known as alt country, progressive country, y'allternative... whatever you wanna call it...

Same could be said about other decades too...

edit: to answer your question, Lydia Loveless is my favorite "newer" country artist...

It's okay, I'm pretty sure he's not your biggest fan either ;)

OP, lots of good suggestions in this thread. I'll add Wade Bowen, Hayes Carll, Ben Danaher, Rob Baird, William Clark Green. Also, check out Sean McConnell and the Dirty River Boys...more Americana than country but still awesome.

Much thanks to everyone who contributed. I'll give them all a listen when I get home. I used to love country when I was a kid but when I tried to get back into it in undergrad all they played on the radio were depressing songs.

Several MB posters (you know who you are) have turned me on to some awesome bands this year. Actually listen to them daily still!
