I gotta tell you guys, even though I've been knowing about Buck Owens for a long time, I recently started listening to a few of his songs and just from these few songs I've checked out by him, he was one hell of a country artist, his songs really pull you in and the music is real country, no question about it. Any of you guys fans of Buck Owens?

I love Buck. He used to stream his weekly Crystal Palace shows over his website. I listened to him a bit the night before he died.

Don Rich isn't to be overlooked in his contribution to Owens' career.

OldHickory, I read that when Don Rich died in that tragic motorcycle accident, Buck Owens never completely recovered from it. They were very close friends, and when Don Rich died, Buck Owens had a really hard time going on professionally from that point. Thankfully he was able to continue his career, and "Streets of Bakersfield" was an awesome comeback song for him :)

I'm currently stuck on his song "Together Again". What a beautiful country song. The steel guitar in that song... amazing.

He had his own TV show in the mid '60s, leaving us clips of Buck, Don and the boys in their prime:

"Cryin' Time"

"Act Naturally"

"Together Again"

No Buck Owens, but his band "The Buckaroos" play Buckaroo. Great work by Don Rich.

At the time of the original version Don was aapparently playing a Telecaster. He was still able to approximate the "ringing guitar" sound which the Searchers got by double tracking a Gibson, and which Roger McGuinn of The Byrds famously got with a 12 string Rickenbacker.

Don Rich was the man and the play between the two of them is something you don't see in country or hell, any kind of music anymore.

I'm a big fan.

Interestingly, I owned a record shop in Italy for 8 years and also frequented record fairs all over Europe. I believe I sold and had more requests for 1960s Buck Owens records than almost every other more traditional country artist combined.

Buck was HUGE in the 60s. Hee Haw was a step back for him, less touring, etc, especially after Don Rich died.

He had a syndicated show called the Buck Owens Ranch Show before he did Hee Haw, and I think he also did them simultaneously for the first three or four years of Hee Haw. He'd do a couple of songs, he had a girl singer named Susan Raye who would do a song, and there was usually a guest artist. It was basically Hee Haw minus the cornball humor. LINK

I used to watch Hee Haw as a kid followed by the Dukes of Hazzard. I thought they were so funny. Great memories from my childhood.

And now we get to re-live those Hee Haw moments courtesy of RFD TV! Caught Loretta Lynn the other night plus there's a shite ton of stuff up on the youtube.
