He certainly did along with Parks

I love this story about John and Brian.
A little story from Alice Cooper about when Brian Wilson met John Lennon...again. ...and again
“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist), Micky Dolenz and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues.
During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles. Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met!
They were virtually neck and neck with the Stones in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, if they REALLY have never met, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’
So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, nice to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened.
About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about it being nice to meet him.
As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him dozens of times and it's always the same thing. He’s not well, you know.’”

Musicians from the 60s and 70s are going to start going fast. Really bums me out.
I've long maintained that the day Paul dies will be the day that the music truly dies.
I am not looking forward to that day.

Mick, Keith, Ringo, Ray, Dave, Pete, Roger and Eric are still around.

One of my absolute favorites.
Maybe my favorite American musical artist. His impact on music will last a long, long time.
Saw him live in 2018.
The Beach Boys are probably the quintessential American band.
First album I remember listening to with my dad too.
RIP

Yeah, that's true.
But they're not James Paul McCartney.

He took what Phil Spector did in the studio and refined it.

The Beach Boys had 3 US #1s. The Beatles had 20!

Could have easily been 50.

Having said that...I recently went to try to give Pet Sounds another chance to raise its profile in my eyes, and...I still kind of just don't get it.
Go sit down at a piano and learn all the chords to god only knows. Then come back and say you don’t get it.

Glad I got to see him back in 2022, but at the same time felt strange as he was obviously kind of not there behind the piano.

Yea, it's not a great album. There's 3 or 4 good tunes on it, with a lot of other junk. The best song (imo) is a cover tune.
...and for the record, I do like the Beach Boys.

Hate being the only one here commenting on this, but one of those 3-4 “good” songs is one of the most universally praised ‘perfect’ songs. From Paul McCartney to Elton John to sting to flea to Hans zimmer. Everyone agrees there’s one completely “perfectly” written song. So simple and complicated, such simple yet poignant lyrics, Brian Wilson can’t be recreated.

On The Beatles channel this AM they played Caroline, No...and I don't get it.

quote:No doubt, he was a genius. But I also feel it was more of a "forced" genius. That is to say, it's like he sat down to be as complicated and complex as possible...no natural flow. The Beatles were the opposite. It was almost all flow. That's not to say they weren't technicians also. But Brian was just too inside his own head.

If he had had 50 songs as good as God Only Knows, then he would have been relatiavely Beatles level. The Beatles probably have 75 songs at least that are God Only Knows level.

Agree to disagree on that I suppose. The Beatles were a pop band that wrote a few intricate songs and Brian was an intricate composer that wrote a few pop songs. I guess it’s preference because Caroline no is one of my favorites haha. I also LOVE the Beatles, so I get that as well.

Would you mind steering me to 3 or 4 deeper Brian cuts I might not be aware of?

This I agree with.
But there's a lot of unwarranted praise heaped on his work overall.
...and it's not fair to compare anyone to the Beatles, because they're unreachable, but they (The Beach Boys) were nowhere near them.
Nor was Brian anywhere near John, Paul and even probably George.
Just my opinion.
