Billy Joel doc..there were no bad guys in his marriages

really enjoyed the doc. i felt like i was reliving my childhood from a different viewpoint. very much hit me in the feels and the mid-80s concert at UNO feels different now; Nylon Curtain had just come out so that dominated most of the songs he played.
was he wrong for stealing his best friend's wife? of course but he confronted him (and got slugged in the face) and his conscience bothered him to the point he tried to kill himself twice. amazing he survived. also he was practically still a teenager at the time so he gets a pass. hard not to feel for his friend who drove him to the hospital and stayed with him even after how all that went down. dude was better off without a woman who wasn't in love with him anyway.
then of course she comes back into his life a year later and he goes on to give her complete autonomy to run his career and she stayed by his rock-and-roll lifestyle side up to the point he almost killed himself in the motorcycle wreck. gave him the key back to his house while he was in the hospital and said 'i'm not going to watch you kill yourself'. she was 100% in the right to leave.
if she's in her 70s now she is still in her prime.
what a looker
Christie Brinkley..my opinion of her went WAY UP after this. watching all the video cam footage she made..you could ABSOLUTELY see she loved him like no other and is the one who sniffed out of that rat of of a manager. again, much like his first wife she stayed by his side and only had his best interest in her heart but when he's doing 300 shows a year and drinking until 4am every night afterward thats not much of a role model for his little girl and again, she was ONE HUNDRED PERCENT in the right to leave. he knew it too. also those tears were sincere; you can see she still loves him. when she talked about calling all the bars until one said "yeah, he's here" and she said "don't tell him i called, i just wanted to make sure he was...someplace".
SHE LOVED HIM!
Hot brunette trophy 20something wife. by the mid 2000s he was older, fatter and just wanted to chill at home.
she admitted she wanted to party and he was in a different place in his life just wanting to be home all the time. no one at fault here i can see.
and his current wife..Alexis
beautiful, successful and appreciates that he's home cooking dinner and having a glass of wine for her when she gets off work
i mean, how can you hate on having billy joel making dinner for you every night and playing the piano for you? this one seems like it will last.
billy; just way too trusting of everyone. yes his first wife's scumbag brother fricked him over but i don't see him as an a-hole in any way; he's a fricking rock star..that means he's going to drink alcohol and do drugs excessively. you have to know that going in.
the fact his original band is still with him is crazy. its also crazy how well all of these people 'from the 60s and 70s' have aged. sometihng good in the water in upstate NY
anyway, crazy documentary and so hard to believe after a string of number one albums he was broke in the mid 80s. the "talent" (how i hate that word) seems to be a pawn for these predator music biz people. insane how he could tour 300 days a year for 15 years and have 7 gold albums and not have money to pay rent. glad to see he came out of that ok. he's a better man than i am when he said "rather than focus on lawsuits and trying to get money back, i just went back into the studio and made more platinum albums"
so bj is my homie and i'll fight anyone who disparages him.
ETA sorry. i know the rules

Enjoyed the Doc. Was already familiar with much of it. I never thought about his marriages as much as the way he parted ways with his old band, including Liberty who was such an important part of his success. It was Liberty who suggested Piano Man be played as a waltz.

Katie Lee was/maybe still is on the food network for a while

Great summary. I was in no way prepared for how much I got into it. Really good and honest story telling from the man himself. I had no idea of all the troubles he had throughout his life, but also realize how self-inflicted most were.
Funny babe story in the doc. Christie Brinkley heard he was playing piano in a little bar in St. Barth's while she was there for an SI swimsuit shoot. She went down there and they started chatting and having a great time. Eventually Elle McPherson showed up, was a HUGE Billy Joel fan, and started talking to him too, making Christie start to feel jealous. Not a bad position for BJ to be in...
Great watch for anyone, even if you're a borderline fan.

it doesn't get much more 80s than that.
my other takeaway after watching a 5 hour documentary is i don't think they actually played a single one of his songs all the way through the entire documentary.
maybe thats some kind of 'fair use' thing and HBO didn't want to shell out for that.

I watched part 1 and didn't watch anything after that. He was a cum stain for hooking up with his best friend's wife. ...but so was she.
That girl from the cooking show that he married was really gorgeous.

he was like 19, told his buddy he had fallen in love with her before cheating on him, was so distraught he took an entire bottle of sleeping pills and drank a bottle of lysol and the woman ended up leaving both guys.
not exactly a one-night stand and when he reconnected a year or so later, ended up marrying her.
you have a funny definition of what a cum stain is, oh perfect one.

Weber and her brother robbed him blind, though. I'm not saying she was 100% wrong and Joel was 100% right, but a reasonable narrative has the Webers being a net negative.
To quote the Piano Man himself, "I hooked up with the Borgias! What a family to pick!" - but to be completely fair, that wasn't all on Elizabeth.
Brinkley, similar deal. I ain't sayin' she a gold digger, but...
Joel couldn't keep a good thing going in that marriage and it is probably closer to a 50/50 thing.
I have no opinion on the Katie Lee thing.

i guess the #1 supermodel of the 80s was hurting for money & needed to marry BJ to get his.

She picks super flawed guys with money. I don't know what else to tell you.
(To be fair - Brinkley was crazy about Joel until she wasn't. She was banging that Taubman guy for 9 months to a year before her and Joel even divorced. Between him and Cook, she sure could pick 'em....)

if you watched the documentary you would change your mind.
the fact she shared so much of that home video footage she made while they were together and how many times she teared up; i believe she sincerely loved him and didn't want to get divorced.
you can blame her if she was cheating, but how long was she supposed to sit at home by herself while he's out carousing on the road doing God knows what with God knows how many groupies or whatever else.
maybe he was a saint, but in my experience, binge drinking and taking drugs leads to poor decision making so i absolutely think he had to have been fricking around on her as well. you don't tour for 300 straight days and say 'oh well, i'll have sex one day when i get back home'
so no, christie did nothing wrong.

for me (and I’m sure every other heterosexual male watching) the discomfort was in seeing someone as beautiful and kind as Christie Brinkley being so in love with someone and that someone fricking it up just to drink LOL. If I had been billy joel I’d have never even looked at a glass of whiskey again if that ensured a happy marriage with her LOL
but I guess that would have cost us some great music so…

quote:i agree. from pain comes great art; piano man was written after 2 failed suicide attempts, nylon curtain (which he said he believed was his best work and i agree but i know thats not a popular opinion on here) from his near-death motorcycle accident and honestly what broke my heart the most was he created that classical music album which i had never heard of it..to get his dad's attention..and he still never even told him he loved him.
but I guess that would have cost us some great music so…
so much of his music (all of it?) was a direct result of personal relationships, but you could tell by watching that the one that hurt him the most was his dad.
just tell him you fricking love him one time, was that so much to ask?

I do and she was.

If you don't like being married to a drunk, carousing rock star, get divorced, then move on.

No way. Is Billy Joel, at heart, a "good guy"? I have no doubts about that. Is he a Saint? Nope.

Except all the adultery, including getting pregnant while still married to Joel. That's wrong. Every time.
(I said that it was probably closer to 50/50 with Brinkley. If you want to suggest it might have even been 60 Joel, 40 Brinkley, I don't have heartburn with that.)
