Ragged Old Truck
I love you baws and bawettes so much. We’re professional shite talkers here, but we’re all family.
My dad sent me this today. I’ve always been a fan of BJS, but I’d never heard the backstory. If you like a good story and a good song, I think you’ll appreciate it.

Billy Joe is an under appreciated national treasure. Country music would be so much less without him. Few people realize how many of country’s mainstays he has written.
He will be 80 tomorrow.
Here is an article about Waylon’s Honky Tonk Heroes that is all Billy Joe. LINK

The story goes that Jennings had promised Billy Joe Shaver, then an unknown songwriter from Texas, that’d he’d do a full album of Shaver’s songs (according to Shaver’s memoir, Honky Tonk Hero) or just “Willie The Wandering Gypsy And Me” (according to Jennings’ autobiography, Waylon). But everyone agrees that, after Jennings forgot about the promise and blew Shaver off, Shaver showed up at the studio one night and threatened to beat him up. “Waylon, you said you were going to do a whole album of my songs,” Shaver writes in Honky Tonk Hero. “I’ve got those songs, and you’re going to listen to them—or I’m going to kick your arse right here in front of God and everybody.”

I wonder what Waylon did then

If you have Netflix check out the interview Norm MacDonald did with him, it's excellent plus Billy even sings a couple tunes. It's called "Norm MacDonald has a Show".

That tune pretty much sums up BJS to me. Great country song.

Cinemax did a series called Tales From the Tour Bus, and they did an episode on Billy Joe Shaver. It is worth a watch.
My FIL used to hire him and his son to play cookouts for his oil field workers back before he had any success. They stayed friends for years. If you watch the Tales From the Tour Bus, the leg wrestling story is one of their stories.
Billy Joe is a great story teller, and that clip you linked is great support for that claim. I have seen him play a lot, and it is always a good time with lots of laughs and good music.

A true musical badass. An American treasure.
The devil made me do it the first time.
The second time I did it on my own...

I just thought I'd like to mention
that my Grandma's old age pension
is the reason that I'm standin' here today.
I got all my country learnin'
milkin' and a-churnin'
pickin' cotton, raisin' Hell, and balin' hay.

Billy Joe Shaver is one of the best country performers ever. His son "Fast Eddy" was a great musician as well. Such a shame he died so young.
