Charlie Daniels Band taking 3rd place.
Glad to see a little love for them. Georgia, Trudy, Sweet Louisiana are all underrated songs.

I am going with The Allman Brothers
I don't consider Allmans to be Southern Rock. They were the inspiration and got the ball rolling, but a different type of band.
Skynyrd is the answer here

ETA: I consider the CDB a country act with a rock vibe, not a true "southern rock" band. If so, they're up there with ABB and Skynyrd, but probably in 3rd.
You obviously haven't listened to very much CDB. Most of the stuff is the definition of southern rock. Also surprised not to see Marshall Tucker mentioned more ITT

"Saddle Tramp" is a damn good album. I have a DVD of the second Volunteer Jam. CBD wasn't doing much country on that show.

Yeah, those Volunteer Jam recordings are great. I think I have five or six of them on vinyl. He brought some great acts together for those shows.
One of my first concerts was a Volunteer Jam at TPAC.

Remember my parents buying me this one for Christmas 1980,
wore the grooves off the vinyl.
Thanks for the memory

It's between ABB and LS and the correct answer is LS. I don't think it's very close. Their catalogue is deeper and their best songs are better. I love ABB, but this is an easy one.

Swinging Medallions . . . holy shite. Cyril Vetter of Baton Rouge wrote Double Shot and sold it. Became a massive frigging hit (have no idea if Cyril retained royalties or sold it outright). Every time a local band at a local dance plugged in, they started hearing cries for "Double Shot".
FWIW here is the original version of "Double Shot", from 2 years earlier. The lead singer would later write "Abraham Martin & John"

As far as I know. I spoke to him a couple of years after Katrina about the documentary his daughter had done on Deacon John.
By the way, you probably know this, but his band, The Greek Fountains were a huge deal in BR and South Louisiana in the sixties. Cyril, Duke Bardwell, Tommy Miceli, Don Chesson and Danny Cohen.

Got to say, this is a kind of a pointless question.
I don't think there ever was a competition, the musicians were playing music that they liked, and hopefully other people enjoyed it also.

Southern Rock was named for them, it's a genre because of them.

No doubt, but Skynyrd ended up defining it from a "rock" standpoint, although ABB is a much better overall band. The great southern bands all had a little bit of their own style. ABB blues, Skynyrd driving rock and roll, Marshall Tucker jazz/country.

Link?
I realize a lot of people apply the term to them nowadays. That was NOT the case during their heyday.

Exactly

It can be argued that from a talent stand point,
Derek/Warren>Dickey/Duane
Either way ABB is the correct answer. Skynyrd a close 2nd.
I'll take DBT and Panic all day though
