And this one was written in response to that one:

Play it All Night Long - Warren Zevon

Grandpa pissed his pants again
He don't give a damn
Brother Billy has both guns drawn
He ain't been right since Vietnam

"Sweet home Alabama"
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

Daddy's doing Sister Sally
Grandma's dying of cancer now
The cattle all have brucellosis
We'll get through somehow

"Sweet home Alabama"
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

I'm going down to the Dew Drop Inn
See if I can drink enough
There ain't much to country living
Sweat, piss, jizz and blood

"Sweet home Alabama"
Play that dead band's song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

Pretty cool sound, I am still young enough to have experimented in the first days of punk, and I still appreciate it. I can't help but still try to slip some punk style licks in,with country songs that I write, but disguise it as a spagetti western sound.
Let's be honest though, lyrically, most of that stuff is 1D..cool to listen to,but not great song writing.

Springsteen.

Tribute or spoof? No doubt it was referencing Bruce without saying it,bruce was owning the radio at that time, and I love old Bruce, but he lost his edge from the early days.
The Wilberries could do and say anything they wanted, they are all icons, they don't have to explain a damn thing.

When I was in bands and stuff, back in the day, I tried to convince the people that I am playing with "let's think like we are already stars" don't limit ourselves to playing tribute stuff, let's make our own waves.
I never got much work in cover bands, just keep doing my own thing.

assuming you are talking about the SK song... I would say great song writing is relative, but it is a great song... and a seminal one the mid 90s

You use the word"relative",but I think "subjective,or Objective" work better.
For me personally, I never want to be famous,I like my privacy. I would though, like to hear my songs done by singers with great voices,so I write with this in mind.A lot of changes, bridges, with meaning, self explanatory lyrics that tie everything together, and give the singer something to believe in,so they aren't afraid to belt it out.
It may never happen, but the trying, that is the definition of me.

from Petty..

quote:

Yeah, it was not meant to mock him at all. The song was supposed to. . . It started with Bob Dylan saying, "I want to write a song about a guy named Tweeter. And it needs somebody else." I said, "The Monkey Man." And he says, "Perfect, 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man.'" And he said, "Okay, I want to write the story and I want to set it in New Jersey." I was like, "Okay, New Jersey." And he was like, "Yeah, we could use references to Bruce Springsteen titles."

He clearly meant it as praise. We weren't trying to knock anybody, and there's not much of it in there anyway. So we sat and wrote the song. The English guys [George Harrison and Jeff Lynne] left, actually. It was the only song that they were like, "This is just too American. We're out on this one." So the two of us just sat there for most of the afternoon, and then we edited it down the next day.

to each their own... I don't listen to music with any preconceived idea of what you mentioned below, meaning how a song should be structured... sometimes simple is better...

I don't write music, so i'm sure I'd look at songwriting different if I did...

I work on this also, the shite that rocks, that is pretty simple, makes people move, but I still won't slouch on lyrics, maybe an understandable situation without detail, just a groove.
