In this day and age, as proven by the posts in this thread, it's pretty tough to be a big rock band. Radio, especially among rock, indie, alternative fans, is pretty pitiful. You don't have a modern day equivalent to a band like Zeppelin being played on numerous stations on the dial at all times of the day like you did back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. With the internet and satellite radio, folks are able to discover so many different bands and artists. Some catch on and become "famous", but these days it seems it's all about hip hop on the radio, award shows, MTV, and print.
I don't think the quality of rock music has diminished, at all. In fact, I think there's more great music at our fingertips than at any time in history. What has changed is the road to fame. Rock bands practically have to sell out and play shitty music to get mainstream play these days...like Coldplay, who went to absolute shite in their quest to become mainstream and famous.
