Are you looking for something outside of the box?
Something that shifts the paradigm?
A gamechanger?

Well considering its rappers...
I'd go with pen pal letters.

Pushing the envelope has come to mean who can use the word "f*ck" the most times while threatening to shoot cops and broomstick - rape women.

Rick Ross, he is pushing the envelope on how fake a rapper can be, he might as well call him self an actor.

I know a mailman who likes to freestyle. Does that count? I mean he is literally pushing envelopes daily.

all great rappers are. No uneducated thug from the projects that kills cops and rapes and beats women can rhyme and flow like the best rappers can. Rap is all an act that perpetuates a stereo type.
Here is the resume for some of America's favorite "thugs":
1. Tupac - studied acting, poetry and ballet at the Baltimore School for the Arts as well as performing in various Shakespeare plays and the Nutcracker. Murdered.
2. Biggie -attended a private catholic school, doing extremely well in class and wining numerous creative writing and English awards before transferring to public school. Murdered.
3. Ice Cube - began writing in his keyboarding class, wrote most of the lyrics in NWA, now does family movies and TBS shows. Dead inside.
4. Kanye West - grew up in a middle to upper class suburban neighborhood, his mom was the head of the English department at Chicago State University and his father an accomplished journalist. Now an egocentric jackass with no grip on reality.
5. Snoop Dogg - sang in his church choir and plays piano. Never in a gang, loves weed, now Snoop Lion a terrible rastaregge something or other.

i'm not saying you have to be a thug to rap. what i'm saying is RR literally took another man's name and persona and is pretending to be someone else, he calls himself rick ross and there is an actual rick ross in jail, that's crazy to me. he was a correctional officer... which is fine, but don't act like you where dealing in the streets. he even names his own company after a car already out there.

As far as trying too hard to be 'out there' I'd say Childish Gambino.

Well he's only tried to have that "image" on Royalty. I agree that it's horrible. He needs to go back to his Culdesac/EP days. He's easily one of my top 5 rappers though.

Danny Brown is pretty out there, not your traditional rapper by any means but definitely intriguing
