For me it's a toss up between John Williams and Thomas Newman.

In the words of the film's screenwriter, Joseph Stefano:

"I saw a rough cut of the film, and I thought it was okay.

Then I saw it with the music..."

He makes the music a character in the story

I like the OP picks but I will have to go with James Horner.

John Williams and Horner are up there.

Might I add Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the work they have done

Don’t know howYou downvote those three goats.

Burwell’s score for Carol was perfection. One of my recent favorites.

Here are a few of my other favorites:

Philip Glass

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis

Clint Mansell

Marcelo Zarvos

Harry Escott

Johann Johannsson

Yes, all his work is very good, especially the Eastwood flicks.

Basil Poledouris too. Conan soundtrack is very impressive.

Some other good ones mentioned as well.

Not a single person, but Explosions in the Sky have imitated for 15 years in film scores.

The best

guitarists
rap
album

now this....

For some this is easy but to me it's more about who's the best at that moment, that time, that instant... like a football team, President, or song. Very seldom is there truly a forever best.

Just dropped in to add this YouTube movie link about sound track composition and composers. It was well worth the 90 minutes.

It has to be John Williams.

Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Wars
Jurassic Park

Any of those would be a crowning achievement for a composer, and he did 4 of them. I'd argue that he delivered the top 3 most iconic scores of all time, except possibly for 2001 getting into the top three.
