Van Halen was never a hair metal band. Poison, Ratt, Winger, Dokken, Motley Crue, etc. were.
I don't consider Ozzy (or Randy Rhodes) to be hair metal acts at al all.

There’s several 80’s guys but none stand out from each other really. Of course they have a particular “sound” but most could play the plug and play game. The only to truly set himself apart was EVH and I’m not saying because of his death.

VH wasn't a hair metal band, but they absolutely DID create the genre, even if it was by accident. Obviously the scene became a caricature of itself and wore out its welcome, but many of those bands attempted to check the same boxes on the list drafted by VH...
