Played for a few years back in day, but haven't in the last 10 years. Looking to get back into it here pretty soon. What guitar should I buy?

Electric or acoustic?

I have a nice electric guitar that I'd probably be willing to part with for an entry level price

You want something that feels good to you, not necessary what we think.

Here is my 2cents:

Mexican used fender is a good idea

Les Pauls sound great but I'll take a fender, tele or strat, for playbillity and comfort. Neck, pick board, and weight it just feels better. I don't want a les Paul for more than a song or two, great sound or not.

Check out danelectros also. Price for new is low and quality is decent. I love the 59. Tone is great. Pickups are cool and the knobs are the most sensitive of anything Ive messed with. Feels like a toy it's so lite.

Acoustic check out a used seagull.

There's a nice-looking used Seagull on CL in my area.

this can't be stressed enough. Also think about what tones or style of music you want to play.

Telecasters are great guitars. But their sound and body design isn't a fit for me.

You can spend thousands of dollars on a custom strat, but if it's not comfortable or tonally appeasing to your ear, you're not going to be happy.

Unless op wants to roll the dice and buy a B Stock on eBay.

After I pickup a 5150 I'm going to get an ESP LTD c-401b.

If you plan on sticking with it, don't buy something cheap. Cheap, starter guitars are usually harder to play than more expensive ones.

I don't think this is a bad thing. Playing a cheap piece of shite acoustic that rapes your fingers makes you a better picker in the end.

There's no benefit to a device that's unnecessarily difficult to use. That's true for instruments, tools, hell, everything I can think of.

If you can make a fricky Crescent sing, you'll drop a fat load when you pick up a Martin. Just my opinion, at least.

Yeah, but if the action is too high, or it won't stay in tune, or the intonation sucks, etc, you might just quit in frustration. It shouldn't cost a ton to get these basic things right, or take a Martin.
