Beginner Electric Guitar & Amp for Kid
Posted by slacker130 on 12/4/17 at 10:41 am00
I have a 10 year old who wants an electric guitar for Christmas. He's been playing acoustic for about a year and definitely stuck with it. He likes the Stratocaster body style. Without breaking the bank, any suggestions? $200-300 guitar, amp $150ish?

Squier has starter amp and guitar combo kits in that range.
Or are you saying 300 for a guitar and $150 for an amp?

I'm going to go with some advice you're going to get flooded with - go used. You can get decent used stuff that can serve needs a lot longer, than to get new "beginner" gear that the kid will either grow out of, or abandon, quickly.
And the bright side - if you spend just a little more up front, you won't lose nearly as much if you have to sell it in 6 months/1 year like the "new" beginner gear that nobody wants, particularly used.

I was gonna suggest used too.
$150 amp? Fender Mustang amps. It can sound like 20-100 different amps and pedals and settings.
$300 guitar. Go to Guitar Center or Reverb and put $300 max in the price box. You will go blind scrolling through all of the options.
Reverb is like eBay on returns. So it is usually solid. Guitar Center is like wal Mart on returns within 45 Days they take it all back. They just hang back on the wall. Somebody else will buy it. Guitar Center will probably be free shipping or at most 20 bucks.

Yeah, separate. I know there are kits that are garbage, kinda want to avoid the cheapest crap.

Thousands of choices in your prices then. Literally thousands if you go used.

buy used off craigslist/reverb. better yet go hit up some music shops and guitar center and let him play on some guitars to see what he likes the feel of. then get it cheaper off craigslist or reverb.

Squire starter pack is a great choice if you want to go new. Squires are easy to play and sound pretty decent for the money. If he sticks with it, he can upgrade the pickups and have a nice little gigging guitar. The frontman is a fun little starter amp, same one I grew up on.
However, you can get a much better value and longevity on used gear if you're willing to pay a little more. Epiphones can be found for around 200-250 on Craigslist. A great Amp for a beginner would be a Fender Mustang II. It has so many preset distortions that he'll spend days just goofing off experimenting with different tones.
I've also heard a lot of good things about Agile guitars, especially their 3000 and up model LP clones that go for around $350 and up.

If you go the Squire route, the Classic Vibe series have a reputation for having a little bit better quality.

squier guitars are total shite. the build quality is terrible and they are generally not a fun guitar to play. their pickups are low quality, the frets craftsmanship are subpar quality and the tuners are bad.
used fender and gibson guitars can be had for not a lot of money and even the new duo sonic line is quality for the price.
$500 brand new gets you one of these:
