This genre is some of my favorite music ever but the moniker "Shoegaze" is an amazingly stupid name. I understand the origin but it still doesn't describe the sound very well. It's like calling classical music "Nosepick".

I’ve really liked that Peel Dream Magazine album. Definitely doesn’t break any new ground, but it is really well done.

Ride are my favorite of the genre, even more so than MBV...
While Nowhere is supposedly their shoegaze masterpiece, my favorite is off of Going Blank Again... from the 2 minute mark on, is pure bliss...

They certainly belong in this discussion. I particularly love SF59's first three albums: Silver, Gold, and Americana.
Shoegaze dovetails nicely into a lot of 90's alternative rock. Arguments could be made for The Verve, and Deftones. Of course Smashing Pumpkins has also already been mentioned as well.
