It is true that the Monkees were brought together for a television show, but after their first album (where they did not have anything to do with the playing and writing of the songs) they sang and performed on the rest of their albums. This was quite a point of contention for them as they actually were good musicians who were actors. I am not sure about the song writing but they fought for the right to, and won, play and and sing their own songs going forward. They were not "Amateurs".
