This might be a stupid question, but does it return to its original look when you bring it back inside? I don't want to try it otherwise.

Euclid in the Bywater is my favorite

I'll second that. Nobody in New Orleans comes close to Euclid. I've also found some good stuff at Domino and Louisiana Music Factory.

There's a Record Raid coming up on 6/11 at the People's Health Jazz Market on OC Haley. Each one I've been to was bigger than the last. It should be fun.

I am going to New Orleans in a couple of weeks, and I am going to check Euclid out.

How is the Mushroom for records? I haven't been there since I got into vinyl, but I seem to remember them having a lot of stuff?

Deftones "White Pony", 2000 Maverick Records

Easily their most accessible album, I consider it a classic. Abe's drums and Chino's vocals sound amazing here.

The Mushroom might be worth a visit too. I'm not in that part of town often so I'm not sure what it's like these days. I remember it being a bit of a mess and full of other types merchandise but a lot of records also.

Last time I dropped in at Mushroom, I scored a couple of gems. If you're in the area, I say go for it.

Here is where I buy my records locally--for when I have an itch and just need to buy new records right now...

The Mushroom--about every 4 weeks or so (I am uptown a good bit)
Euclid--a couple times a year--I don't really go to the Marigny except for Euclid
Barnes & Noble--about once a month--on Veterans in Metry (pass it almost daily)

I don't do Peaches in the FQ as she gouges--especially on RSD...I believe she lost the RSD deal now due to numerous people calling the RSD folks and complaining. Part of the RSD deal is to not charge over retail.
The one positive from this is that my friend with me on RSD last year found the Phish 1995 box and Grateful Dead Nassau box well after noon on RSD at Peaches as they were $60 and $40 over MSRP so many people passed on them...the Mushroom only had one of each and I got them.

I do still purchase a fair amount of records from ElusiveDisc online though...I have an across the board standing 20% off anything and everything and free shipping with them--but I earned it--I've spent over $40k with them--2 loaded VPI tables, 3 Lyra cartridges, numerous phono stages, cleaning supplies, vacuums, measurement devices, and at least 1500 180g records over the last 8 years or so.

Also, I sometimes get on the ElusiveDisc site late night and start browsing through the new releases (I highly advise against doing this--I can't seem to stop adding LPs to my cart!). Usually about 4 days later, a box of about 30 records shows up at the door. It takes me a couple months or so to really give them all a good listen a couple times each.

I don't do this as often as I used to however, as I have reached the point of already owning most of the albums that I really liked over the years on reissues. Most of my purchases now are new releases, or the artist that finally approved the remaster for the first time and I have been waiting for it to be released.

I also will not but just any old reissue--I usually will hunt for a certain record company's reissue (Classic Records or RTI or the Japanese Import for example)--there are differences.

What is the best way to get started on a beginner rig?

I have never owned a record player and that needs to be corrected.

What would be a good beginner set up? What are the essentials?

Looking to spend maybe $200-$300.

Do you have a receiver or integrated amp and speakers now?
Are you just looking to add a record player to an existing stereo system?

If yes to the receiver, does it have a PHONO input?
If no, then you will need a phono pre amp in addition to the record player.

My advice is to search this very thread and you will find all the answers to get you started. Look back around page 40-60 or so. The topic of getting started with vinyl has been explained in great detail. It won't take that long if you just skip over all the posted pics of what we are currently spinning--which is about half of this thread.

But, a simple answer is yes, you can get a decent record player in the $350 range. I always recommend the ProJect Debut Carbon as it is probably the most popular "starter" table on the planet. There are others, of course, but I can speak for the ProJect as I have one in a second system.

You can sometimes find them on sale for $300-$350...they retail at $400 I believe. I wouldn't get anything below that level if you want to get the attributes that vinyl offers. The above recommended table comes with a decent cartridge as well (Ortofon 2M Red).

Realistically, to get started in vinyl with new gear, a phono pre amp, and some cleaning brushes and cables, you are looking at around $500. As I always, I recommend buying new over old vintage for a noobie because vintage gear usually takes a little "audio knowledge" to get it back up to peak performance (I explained this thoroughly earlier in this thread as well).

Go to MusicDirect.com and Elusivedisc.com and JerryRaskinsNeedleDoctor and search their sites. Look at different tables and phono pre amps and all the gear and paraphanalia related to playing records--you can learn a good bit just by browsing these sites.

Also, AudioGon.com is the main source for buy/sell of high end audio. While most of the gear for sale there is way over your entry budget, there is sometimes some entry level pieces of gear for sale. Use their search feature.

And last, go to Stereophile magazine website...they have a section called The Entry Level--read up on it--it was designed for people just like you (wanting to jump into vinyl and a beginner audio rig).

I am happy to help answer any questions you may have getting started in this.

Awesome post

I don't have any speakers or an amp, I would be starting from scratch on this rig. I would need to purchase everything.
