You can actually buy something similar at IKEA if you don't want to build it. The Kallax shelving unit is perfect for record storage. I bought one that is two boxes wide and four tall. I removed the top divider and put my system on that shelf and my turntable on top. It works and looks great.

I got my record storage shelves and equipment shelves from IKEA as well. Very cheap and sturdy.

My old crappy receiver broke and I needed to get a new one. I started searching on craigslist and saw some old silver faced receivers that looked pretty awesome. I did some research and talked to my dad about the best brands. I first bought a Yamaha CR-640. It sounded very good, but I really wanted a nice marantz. They are by no means top of the line, but weren't cheap either. I didn't want to spend several thousand dollars on a setup, and the '70s marantz systems were very well built and looked awesome, so I knew I wanted one.

I've owned and sold about 10 different marantz receivers in the past 2-3 years. It just became a hobby of mine to find scores on craigslist and fix and flip them.

I love my scope.

These old Marantz receivers are the most tube-like sounding receiver you can get, short of, you know, actual tubes. I wouldn't trade my 2230 for anything.

OK, I'll play...

The first pic is my main 'table--a VPI Aries 3 with a Lyra cartridge.

This is the rest of the main rig (I have 3 fully functional audio rigs--the others are a bit smaller).

As vinyl records go, I have about 7,000 or so. Probably 2,000 of them are newer reissues on 180/200g pressings.

Enjoy the listen...

This is a turntable that belonged to my uncle before he passed away. It is an old BIC turntable. Not in working condition right now and it has been in storage for a while, so hoping I can get it restored some and have it on my shelf. I like the kind of retro look it has.

Wish there was an Ikea here in Birmingham. I've been searching for a cabinet to put my turntable and receiver on with underneath storing for the albums for over a year now. Can't find exactly what I'm looking for that doesn't cost $500+. Guess I should check Ikea's website, but afraid they'll rape me on shipping.

Too small. I've been looking for something about the size of the current TV stands, but higher so I can change albums while standing up. The ones I find either don't have any storage underneath, or are labeled as buffets and expensive as shite.

Something like this...

I've got a pretty modest setup. Technics SL-B2 TT, a pretty decent Kenwood receiver, some 80s technics speakers.

My setup was bought on craigslist and at goodwill, probably set me back less than $200.

As far as records go, I've got about 120. My favorites are Fleet Foxes, Eels, Jeff Buckley, Tinariwen, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.

My stereo equipment consists of:

Amp - Yamaha M-80
Preamp - Yamaha C-80
Turntable - Yamaha PX-2
CD Players - Nakamichi CD Player 4 and Pioneer PD F100 (100 disc changer)
Cassette - Nakamichi Dragon
Reel-to-Reel - Teac X-1000R
Speakers - JBL L150A
Dynamic Range Expander - dbx 3BX III

I bought this stuff when I was stationed in Korea in the 1980's. Total cost was about $3,000. The sound quality is still excellent, but I don't have many occasions to really crank the volume anymore.

No problem--ask away.

I have been in this hobby for 30+ years and have had every type of audio gear known--really!!... (solid state amps, pure class A amps, high power tubes, flea watt tubes, single ended triodes, class D, OTL, switching amps---and speakers---bookshelf, horns, sealed enclosures, electrostatics, planers, full range drivers, ribbons, line arrays, bi-polars, omni-polars, and conventional).

Over the years, I've owned gear from McIntosh, Audio Research Corp., Krell, Cary, Music Reference, Rotel, Adcom, Plinius, Focal, Acapella, Zu, Magnepan, Sonus Faber, Luxman, Dynavector, Simaudio, Esoteric, Audio Refinement, VPI, Grado, Acoustic Zen, Nordost, XLO, Peachtree Audio, Yamamoto, Klipsch, and a slew of others I just can't recall right now.

I am happy to help anyone as they try to get one step closer to "the Holy Grail" of sound.

And for the record.(pun intended), I have not reached it myself yet!

Enjoy the listen...

Vinyl is great because it goes back to when people listened to an album as a whole. Can't really skip around all over the place with vinyl like you can a CD.

You put the record on from the beginning and take the whole thing in in one sitting.

Plus it's cool checking out the album art work and big liner notes.
