First order of business—you need to know what you want to achieve.
Second—gotta have a ballpark budget.
With those 2 things done, a dialogue can begin.

I know nothing about turntables. I want a good quality one that will last and sounds amazing and would be compatible with a surround sound system. Very simple setup I guess. Good quality. My budget is flexible. I don’t need pro stuff, but I want quality and it to be very nice.

Holy crap, was looking on Best Buy’s website. I had no idea how expensive that stuff can get. I guess Magnolia is a good brand, that’s some serious high dollar stuff.
Would something like this be decent to start out with? Best Buy

I'd get one of the starter models from U-Turn or Pro-Ject before I'd get that Audio Technica.

Big fan of the UTurn Orbit. Great customer service as well.

If you don’t need the amp then take a look at the NAD C 658. Doesn’t have the slick screen on front but by all other accounts it’s about the same thing without the amplifier section.

The LUMIN S1 got a good listen tonight. I can say enough positive things about it. Very impressed with its dynamics. At first, it was set up to play digital audio which apparently by-passes the16 internal DACs. Disappointing. Once I figure out how to set it for analog output, the damn thing came alive. Spent most of the night comparing MQA to FLAC. I’m a MQA believer now.
Also, great not to have to choose between my CD library vs. inferior sound quality. Lots of great recordings out there that I don’t own a copy of.

Good advice on the C658. I demo'd one of these to give some feedback to my audio dealer. I didn't test the phono stage but the DAC rivaled my Mcintosh C47. At the price point for an all in one solution it would be hard to beat.

Best to ever do it...
Townes Van Zandt “Our Mother The Mountain”, (50th Anniversary Edition)
He was always best with just a guitar and his voice, and most of his studio albums suffer from over-production, but there are some great tunes here. Townes in his prime.

What’s the reason for needing 16 DACs?
Posted on 2/21/20 at 9:25 pm to NewIberiaHaircut
Multiple DACs (2 each channel in the S1 for total of 4) can work in parallel (multi-bit) in PCM (pulse code modulation) as you climb the sample rate ladder...16 bits...more processing on the fly when needed...(4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512....) as opposed to DSD/DXD single bit.

This is from the LUMIN website on the S1:
Not sure what this means. Seems to say there are two chips per channel delivering 16 DACs per channel.
Rational for this is nonetheless as you describe.

The SABRE32 chips are multichannel (8 channels each in the ES9018) chips that can process at 32 bits (32 is used more in pro/studio/editing while 16 and 24 are seen more in home /audiophile applications)...they are also frequently used in high end DolbyDigital/DTS 7.1 surround processors (which command 8 discrete channels—hence, 8 channel DACs).
Lumin, and other manufacturers of high end media players, will sometimes “stack” DACs, meaning they will have multiple DACs processing in unison. In this case, they are using (2) ES9018 DACs (8 channels each) PER CHANNEL for a total of 16 DACs/channels for LEFT and 16 DACs/channels for RIGHT.
The DACs channels can be stacked, so to speak, meaning that they can all work together for more power while in PCM mode (multi-bit)...every doubling of # of DACs results in about 4dB increase in dynamic range—which is why the Lumin S1 has a huge dynamic range of 139dB!
...if that makes sense...

So I recently got a U-Turn Orbit Plus. I currently have 5 albums
- A Sailors Guide to Earth by Sturgill Simpson
- Southeastern by Jason Isbell
- Graceland by Paul Simon
- Hotel California by Eagles
- Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
The record is skipping on the 1st track of the B side of Born to Run. All my other records play and sound great.
I’m assuming this is an issue with the record and I should return it right?

Yep. I clean every record before I play it. It was my first time playing that record.

Man Kano is my favorite UK rapper. Really cool to see. I love Hoodies All Summer and have it on vinyl . In my top 3 hip hop albums from last year.
Love seeing Gang Starr also. I occasionally check this thread and haven't seen much hip hop. Nice posts.

Also, what do y’all do with the posters you get with the records? Just keep them in the album or do you do something special?
