Marco,
I was talking to my friend about what i'm wanting to do over the weekend, and he said he has a Quad Vena (v2) he thought might fit most of my needs that he'd be willing to part with for like $350. I've heard of quad before, but i'm not familiar with their quality and thought i'd get your take. They seem to have decent reviews.
I think the vena is a different product than what they are typically known for, typically higher end amps and speakers from the bit of research i've done.
Vena
his reason for parting with them is he wanted more power for what he's using them for currently, but he thought the 45w/channel matched with efficient bookshelf speakers would be good enough for me.

Just another opinion on the Quad Vena - I have it running a pair of Zu Audio Omen (pretty much as efficient as any speaker you'll find) speakers, and the sound is fantastic. It's compact, easy to operate, BT capable & has a high-quality DAC chip.
$350 is a steal for that amp.

I have one running a pair of Vanderstten 1Ci floorstanders... sounds great and yes $350 is a steal. You can sometime find them on MusicDirect for about $600-$700 for a demo, but it’s 1k brand new. They aren’t a cheap amp by any means... I mean they aren’t a McIntosh, but....
I also use it as the source for my “surround sound”. I use an optical cable from the tv to the amp.

Excellent! Thanks for the input guys! Sounds like that might just be perfect for me then. Yeah he’d sell them to me for a steal because I helped him out with some work a while back, and he just really wants more power.
Curious if either of you guys came across any recommended smaller bookshelf sized speakers when you were looking into buying the amp?
Oh, and does the amp shut off/get sent in to standby mode on its own after a certain amount of time if a signal isn’t being sent to it?

Not sure about standby mode, I'd have to read the manual, and can't put my hands on it now.
Before I had my Zu Audio speakers, I had a set of monitor audio silver bookshelf speakers, I thought they sounded very good for what they are, but they definitely benefitted from a sub.

Yes. It will shut off on it’s own.... I’ve had a couple whiskey nights and got up in the morning and the amp being off. Wait... who am I kidding, I’ve had a bunch of whiskey nights
If this is the amp you get you need to make sure the speakers are pretty efficient. My vandys are rated at 90db.
Ultimately, it depends on how much you want to spend on speakers since you are getting a good deal on the amp.

Excellent re: it shutting off. Yeah I think I did read somewhere that 90db was recommeneddd for the amp. Thanks again for info both of you.

I’d tell you to look into the ELAC, but I think they need a little power. I know the Focals tend to be more efficient as I drool over them on a regular basis on audiogon. I’m just not sure how good the “lower” models of the Focals are. That being said they have some used Electra 1007BEs with the beryllium tweeter on audiogon right now... but those frickers are 2k used. I used them as an example b/c they are $4000 brand new and it’s rated at 89db.
Obviously if Marco gets in here he is way more help... especially on the Focals

Need some suggestions with a amp that can push speakers that are 4ohm, I still have alot to learn but this quad vena has issues once I get to about 75% starts clipping. Any suggestions or feedback I appreciate it thanks guys

What are your current speakers? The 45 wpc (probably 90 for 4 ohms) are probably your problem if the speakers are not efficient (90dB or greater) and the music has a large dynamic range.

Sorry homes, I’m not good at making recs for speaker/amp matching, but I’m sure someone will come along soon with some ideas.

I‘ve been busy lately trolling the SECRant. I’ll get you some ideas in a bit...
