Honestly never heard of him until I watched an Americana special late last night. Went to youtube afterwards and checked him out a bit more.
Dude is a bad-arse.

I have loved him for 25 years.
My favorite here LINK
Said Red Molly to James that's a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, my hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Boxhill they did ride
Said James to Red Molly, here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride
Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I'll give you my Vincent to ride
Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won't do
They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

I FEEL SO GOOD LINK
I feel so good I'm going to break somebody's hear tonight
I feel so good I'm going to take someone apart tonight
They put me in jil for my deviant ways
Two years, seven months and sixteen days
Now I'm back on the street in a purple haze
CHORUS
And I feel so good
I feel so good
I feel so good I'm going to break somebody's heart tonight
I feel so good I'm goning to make somebody's day tonight
I feel so good I'm going to make somebody pay tonight
I'm old enough to sin but I'm too young to vote
Society been dragging on the tail of my coat
But I've got a suitcase full of fifty pound notes
And a half-naked woman with her tongue down my throat
CHORUS
They made me pay for the things I've done
Now it's my turn to have all the fun
I feel so good I'm going to break somebody's heart tonight

This post in the non-Phish thread has a link to a very rare clip of Thompson's band Fairport Convention performing on French TV in 1968.
Guitarists will especially want to watch the last song, since it features numerous closeups of Thompson's fingerwork.
A few Thompson classics:
"I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight"
"Withered & Died" -- the remake of this by Elvis Costello is one of the most brilliant covers ever recorded
"Shenandoah"
"1952 Vincent Black Lightning"
"Ooops I Did It Again" (!!!)

I'll go out on a limb and say I'm easily the biggest fan that visits this board. Seen him about 10 times in concert and own 90% of his released music and several bootlegs. Truly a triple threat - great songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist. Not sure I would call him underrated, but he deserves more widespread recognition.
Check out his live album Two Letter Words. Just great

I love Richard Thompson. I've seen him live a couple of times and he can play guitar like he sold his soul.

quote:Ive listened to 52 Vincent song about 96 1/2 times in the last two days. Frickin incredible tune. Surprisingly I stumbled upon a country band that covers it and does it justice imo (and Im not a country fan, dont hate country just never dug in). Band is Reckless Kelly check it out if you get a chance.

Will check out.
As you can see from this thread, his fans tend to be devoted.
The comment about him being a "triple threat" is the truth.
I have another half-baked theory about Richard Thompson's popularity.
Uber-masculine performers who write about masculine themes tend to be overlooked.
Guys like Johnny Cash are few and far between, especially in "rock and roll".
People prefer people who "prance" and wear leather pants.
Richard Thompson writes about gritty Man stuff and delivers it in a manly way.
