Popped up on a suggestion.

Yes. They are huge in Europe. I don't know exactly how you would describe them but symphonic metal with operatic style vocals is close enough. Their singer is literally one of the best singers outside of opera or maybe Broadway in the world. Their songwriting and composition skills are top notch as well. Their song Ghost Love Score is popular with all the react channels on youtube and is a good place to start.
Ghost Love Score
The Poet and the Pendulum I think I like this one more

They've had three different singers so it might be worth checking out each era. Tarja Turunen is very operatic, her replacement Anette Olzen brought more of a pop flair to the band and Floor Jansen, like Brosef mentioned, is a phenomenal singer.

Floor Janson might be the best female singer out there right now. If you want to be entertained watch reaction videos on YouTube to Ghost Love Score Live at Wacken 2013(as Brosef mentioned above). Her high note at the end blows minds all across the world. They play small venues here in America & stadiums/large arenas in Europe.

Watching Wacken show right now. Wow

I've actually only listened to one or two albums. Stick with the live performances. Any of the Wacken shows, Wembley Arena, or the Decades live album from Buenos Aires are all good places to start.

You aren't kidding about her voice.
Watched a couple of reaction videos from music teachers. They were quite complimentary of her voice.
Love metal. Just hate it when I have to put up with a voice that growls... like Opeth or Megadeath

If you like Floor"s voice and want to hear her do something else, look up the videos of her on a show called Der Best Zangers. She's also been releasing random covers on her personal YouTube channel. Her version of Let It Go is great.

Floor is probably almost as talented as Taylor Swift.

Yeah, I know what jokes are coming.

Been listening to Nightwish since before they fired Tarja. The first time I heard them I didn't like it much, thought it was kind of cheesy sounding but Tarja grew as a vocalist and the band has some strong compositions for that kind of music. Once is probably the record to start with for studio work, otherwise they've issued many live recordings and they are definitely best heard playing live.
The concert End Of An Era is a fantastic, and appropriately titled, video/CD document of that version of the band. Not a big fan of Annette, though the 2nd record they made with her was much better because they were able to write the songs for her range and style. It actually expanded their vocabulary nicely. But I was excited when Floor was announced as the permanent vocalist because I was familiar with her from Arjen Anthony Lucassen's efforts (Ayreon, Star One) and After Forever. Floor is the best combination of being able to bring the powerhouse classical/operatic style and a more rock/pop style. Those sustained power notes she does make people talk about having a "Floorgasm", and the above referenced Wacken version of Ghost Love Score has a great one near the end.
Unfortunately Marco Hietala, the bass player and excellent male vocalist, announced his retirement a few weeks ago from the band and public performance. He'll be tough to replace.

I know a few of their songs but that was the first time I heard of Ghost Love Score and what an epic performance. I first heard of them when they played Nemo on XM years ago checked out some of their older stuff. Bless the Child with Tarja is one of my favorites. They played a couple times in New Orleans in the past. I may have to check them out if they come back down here.
