Had always heard of them but was never formally introduced. Listened up on them on Spotify after hearing about their tour with The Afghan Whigs. Didn't hear anything that stood out. What's their appeal?

Doug Martsch is a great guitarist and songwriter. Like a modern day, indie Neil Young. I will say that some of their more involved songs (like most of Perfect From Now On) may take a few listens to soak in.

Did you listen to Carry the Zero? It’s my favorite song ever. Hard for me to imagine someone who likes guitar based music not enjoying that one.

You aren't "supposed to enjoy" any certain band. You have your own tastes and you define it.

As for Built to Spill, I share Seaward's view. Their last couple of albums have been meh, though I do like "Living Zoo" a lot. I can understand why some people may not like Doug's voice...and if that's the case with you, it'll be hard to like a band like this.

Keep it Like a Secret is their best work IMO, which features "Carry the Zero." Perfect From Now On is my second favorite by them, and is more proggy than anything else they've done. I also enjoy You In Reverse quite a bit, though it didn't click with me the first time I listened to it.

The songs are the appeal. The run of

I totally get this. As much as i like some of the songs, most og it I just don't love. You will get recs for Carry The Zero. I like it, but I think Conventional Wisdom is a better introduction even though it should have been shortened.

I also think "Lift" is one of the best song's Doug has written, however it's on his solo album. It's essentially a BTS song.

I just listened to this. Sounds like the droning style that made U2 so much money -- the rock version of disco.

I don't hate it, but I don't hear anything special about it either.

That is definitely not what I hear.

I’m relistening to the Keep It Like A Secret album. I mean, the songs are pretty good in a ‘90s indierock way. But I’m just not seeing how any of this stands the test of time, musically.

The intro guitar to Conventional Wisdom is pretty special. IMHO. YMMV.

I certainly do. One of my all time favorite bands. And they are the soundtrack to all of my take-offs and landings.

Conventional Wisdom is great. Might be their catchiest track.

I don't think I ever thought about the bass before. Check this chick out. I think it's a chick anyway.

Perfect From Now On is far better IMHO
