I've seen ABB several times through the years and it was always hit and miss. I think the first time was around 1980, Atlanta Rhythm Section opened and really blew ABB away. Of course ABB was a mess around that point in time. Also saw them right at the beginning of the Warren Haynes era. Real good show, although IIRC Gregg's vocals were pretty weak at that point.
Probably the best incarnation I saw was the Gregg Allman Band when the Toler brothers were with him. Dangerous Dan was one of my favorite guitar players in those days. I had no idea until I looked him up this morning that he died from ALS earlier this year.

I did not know that. Glad I got to see him and Dickie throw down at The Kingfish when Great Southern was touring.

Skynard and Marshall Tucker are good bands, but I agree, they can't touch the Allman Bros- so much so that this thread is absurd!!

Partially true.
I was fortunate enough (and am old enough) to have seen the original ABB twice. Still perhaps the best live shows, with the most virtuoso performances, I've ever seen. Only thing that may impressed me more was the Jimi Hendrix Experience in, of all places, Hirsch Coliseum in Shreves-ville.
From the late 70's on, the ABB, when they performed at all, were a little hit or miss. But beginning in 1990 or so, the ABB revived, regained their form and were great with Warren Haynes and Allen Woody. Saw them in L.A. and Santa Barbara in the early 90's. They tore it up and were fantastic. Later, I remember a great show at Jazz Fest.
With all due respect to the Marshal Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Wet Willie, and I've seen them all more than once and like them, they aren't in the same league.

They have definitely picked back up this decade. Tier 1 status has been regained, IMO.
