Alison Krauss and Union Station THU 5/7 at the Saenger

anyone else going?
I’ve been trying to see them for decades; they quit touring for a long time and resumed last year. We had tix to the Brandon show last year but couldn’t go. Stoked for this.
Dan Tyminski left the band during the hiatus, the new guitar player is supposed to be killer. Going to dinner at Kingsway beforehand and after a hippy-fied two weeks of jazz fest it will be nice to be civilized for a change.

Saw her years ago with Tyminski and it was a great show. This was about the time O Brother came out. Her voice is amazing live.

I'll be there.
Russell Moore has replaced Tyminski, and he's great. Same high-soaring harmony voice as Dan, so he fits perfectly.
He's most awarded male vocalist in the history of the International Bluegrass Music Association, so AKUS is like a Bluegrass supergroup.
I love seeing them live. They're so good.

I saw Alison in Chattanooga a few years ago when she was touring with Robert Plant and she has an angelic voice. Should be a good show for you, enjoy it.

Parents saw her Wednesday night said it was great!

the show was fantastic. Everyone on that stage is so talented, some are the best at what they do in the world. We had great seats and it was just a spectacular evening of music in that beautiful theater. I’m so glad we finally got to see her and them in person
This is not a criticism…just a personal opinion probably influenced by a thousand hours of live music over the years…but I am not a fan of truncating songs (medley-ization?) in order to fit them in to a set. It makes the show seem rushed and takes me out of the immersion into that incredible music. Probably half the set, including all or most of the older songs, are abbreviated to just the first verse or two and one run thru the chorus. “The boy who wouldn’t hoe corn” was especially egregious. It’s a bad artistic choice that I wish she would reconsider
anyway, she is magnificent as is the band and if I had tickets to another show tonite it would happily go. In the meantime I’m spinning my well worn copy of “live 2002” and singing along

also…having not seen a live show before I had no idea Alison Krauss was so funny
. If the singing and fiddling doesn’t work out she could have a career as a stand up comedian

I’m not a huge fan of the “medley” either, but it’s not horrible. They’ve got a fairly large catalog, so I understand the idea. I heard it last year in Brandon, and it was a little weird at first. Seems like most folks appreciated the music.
What bothered me was the amount of foot traffic up and down the aisles all show long. Constantly.
That and the number of people that can’t dress decently when they go out to an event. So much PFG and Hey Dudes.

I agree show was outstanding. AK has the voice of an angel. I am ok with the shortened versions of the songs, which meant they could get more stuff in. My favorite album of AK + US is “New Favorite” and they were able to fit in about 4 or 5 songs from that record. I’m cool with that.
AK has a very dry sense of humor. Loved it. My lady friend commented on how “busy” the crowd was (then proceeded to get up twice after that
).
Was a bit disappointed in the crowd size. I think the tix were over priced. 13th row for me was $210 each all in. Alison is great, but that’s a touch high for 13th row. I paid about tha much for 3rd row to Robert Plant.
Had oysters at Felix’s Bar beforehand. While they were amazing, we had the absolute worst, most uninterested waitress on earth.

Saw them in Shreveport. We’ve now seen her with Union Station on the O Brother tour, solo, with Robert Plant, and again w Union Station. Always great.
I wish they would cut about a 12 minute barn-burner version of Cluck Old Hen. I could jam on that.

They did play “Choctaw Hayride” Thursday. They killed. I love me a good bluegrass hoedown.

My wife and I were there, and I agree with the sentiments here.
The crowd was small, we were on the 5th row and paid $240/seat. It was high, but I have been a fan of hers since the 90's so this had been a long time coming for me.
I also am not a huge fan of medleys. I get that her catalog is so vast she is making an effort to squeeze everything in. I guess the other side of that coin is leaving the show saying she didn't play xx or yy. But it seems like I am just getting into a song and then it's over. I would have enjoyed a nice 7-8 minute jam session as well. Those musicians are so talented, it was a pleasure to watch them perform.
I thought the opening act was surprisingly good. He was a young kid who was born in France. It was just him and his guitar, which I am always a fan of. He had a Dylan-esque vibe, and his songs seemed like older throwbacks to the troubadour days. Since the show I've listened to more of his stuff and I like what I've heard so far.
