Has to be millions (plural). What albums can you think of? I will start out with Stryper to hell with the devil. Sold over 2 million copies

Tapestry by Carole King sold more than purple rain, like a Virgin and the Joshua tree

Slim Whitman - "All My Best"

In 1979, Whitman produced a TV commercial to support Suffolk Marketing's release of a greatest hits compilation titled All My Best, which went on to be the second best-selling TV-marketed record in music history (behind Peter Lemongello’s “Love ‘76” album 3 years earlier), with almost 1.5 million units sold.

Not sure where this comes from, but Platinum in the US is 1 million copies. Source, RIAA- the people who give the award

RIAA

To Hell With The Devil was certified platinum on that date in 1988. There is no certification for double platinum yet. You are unclear in your original post if you are referring to only US sales or worldwide sales. They may have sold more than 2M worldwide at this point, but I can find no reports to that effect.

This may have been the case at some point, but according to official certifications it is not the case, at least with Purple Rain.

Tapestry was certified Diamond (10M US sales) in 1995. Purple Rain was certified with 13M sales in the US in 1996.

Like a Virgin and The Joshua Tree have both also been certified Diamond (10M) in the US so it is difficult to tell which has actually sold more in the US. I cannot find many of the sales from other countries for Tapestry. The numbers for Like A Virgin and The Joshua Tree seem to indicate they have both sold much more around the world than Tapestry.

Then the person who wrote that is incorrect.

The RIAA cert for Platinum Albums has been 1 Million copies since 1976.

(Singles are Platinum at 2M, perhaps that's where the confusion arises)

I have found some more information. The "Claimed Sales" (so unconfirmed and not certified) of Purple Rain, The Joshua Tree and Tapestry are all at 25M (worldwide). Like A Virgin has claimed sales of 21M. Since the veracity of these numbers is suspect, it is very difficult to determine which of them has actually sold more. But the official certifications for US sales are as I stated above.

Still, that album sold and I can't say I've ever heard it, or could bring it up in conversation with most people and have them know what I'm talking about.

It indeed sold quite a lot. It is from at least a decade before the other records you mentioned (1971). I would be surprised if you haven't heard any of the songs from that record:
I Feel The Earth Move
So Far Away
It's Too Late Baby
You've Got A Friend (later covered by James Taylor)
(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (a song Carole co-wrote for Aretha)

In addition it had her solo version of a song she wrote with her ex, Gerry Goffin, that was a hit for The Shirelles:
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

The album is seen as a landmark in the history of women singer-songwriters. It was the number one album in the US for 15 straight weeks. A record that still stands for a female solo artist.

My sister had that album, and played it a lot. There were a couple of songs from it that got quite a bit of airplay on AM pop radio back then. It really wasn't a bad album, it wasn't my kind of music, but there really were some great songs on it.

One reason I think that it had so much success, that was back in the day when many people bought albums by mail, and that was one of the records that Columbia House pushed hard. If you were in that buying club, they sent it to you and billed you for it, regardless if you actually ordered it.
