Acoustic guitar players: Guitar Center trip today and questions?

The Houston GC in The Heights is a nice location. Very open and friendly. Pick up and plug in for the electric guys.
But I'm acoustic only. I went into their room. Which has a back room. This room has your Taylor and Martin offerings. I've been there twice and they have a Martin D-41 on a low rack for goofballs like me to molest. It is a beautiful $4550 piece of wood. And for the Taylor fans they had a $4800 Taylor on the low hanger. Me and another guy (who could actually play) looked at each other and laughed. Went straight for the shiniest penny.
I'm no fool. I have zero business owning a D-41. So I put her down before making anymore smudges.
Now for the questions.
1. What is you "baby". Mine is a Blueridge BR-160. It is incredible to my ear and a boldface copy of a Martin D28. That guitar struck gold when I picked it up. Like a dog at the pound being picked buy a rancher with 5,000 SF and a ranch. This guitar will be TREATED LIKE a D28. Got a hygrometer, and it lives in the case. What is your "baby"? Mine was used and I paid $399. What are you guys willing to pay for your "baby"?
2. I saw a OM-28JM. The JM is for John Mayer. It's his signature model. They had one used for $2799. It is incredible. For the smaller body it booms and is just perfect. I thought $2799 was a little low? Can't be right?
3. I also saw something I have never seen. A Takamine "lawsuit guitar" serial # says 1977. Price is $399? It does not appear to be their D28 copy, it appears to be their D-18 copy. The back is mahogany, but the top was nice spruce. I've seen "lawsuit guitars" go for higher. This model would be a d-340 I think. I always assume GC is the devil and cant possibly be underpricing their used guitars. Like a casino that loses money??
4. Strings. What do you use and why? I've used D-Dario, Martin, elixir, and I have my new set of Ernie Balls ready to go. Aluminum bronze. Any Ernie Ball love? The John Mayer guitar I played had been restrung with DDario nickel over steel I believe strings. They sounded good, but I believe it was the awesome guitar.
TLDR... But I want another guitar nerd discussion. with guys who know a lot more about guitars than me. I can pay anyone back with Gillette DE safety razor expertise.

I have no money. I have never had money. I can't even afford to shop for a "baby". I simply play with what I have.

Ovation Elite T (USA made)
My stepchild is a vintage Guild D-35 with bad cracks in the side. Fantastic sound, but I know it's a terminal disease.
Counting my son's acoustic, an Ovation Celebrity (Korean made), I'm all in for all 3 guitars (the Ovations new, mind you) for $1,400. I see no need to spend 2 to 4 times that for a single new acoustic from Martin or Taylor (although I lean Taylor).

D'addario are the factory strings for Ovation, which is how I got turned onto them. I use them on the Guild, too.

I just don't think there is much of a market for 70s Takemine - I could be wrong, but their reputation didn't get boosted stateside until everyone and his brother started gigging with their AE models (first ones in 1978, IIRC). If you like that guitar, I would consider it - that's probably a decent market value - it's value should only increase over time as long as it stays reasonably in playing condition and reasonably original. Those are the questions I would ask - original tuners would be key. If it's had saddle or nut work, fret dress or things like that over the years, I wouldn't worry about that. But if it's had repairs to the top or sides or required bracing, I'm not sure I'd give that much. You can kick in a couple hundred more and find a nice example of Guild from that period.

The problem with it maybe bad. I looked at several. One of which had some drop from the bridge to the sound hole. I know that could be a dry guitar but the GC room is pretty well maintained. So I don't know?
It left the action high. Which of course can be simple or $400.
What can be done for your cracked sided Guild? I mean if Willie can still play Trigger? Of course he probably has a luthier or two on hand at all times that's paid in weed who perform heroic measures on that thing.

I emailed pictures to a luthier in Baton Rouge a few years back. He started talking about reconstruction and $600 or better for repairs, just to get started. The guitar in excellent condition wouldn't be worth that, or just barely, plus it puts the sound at risk. I will say that, with light playing over about 8 or 10 year it has not progressed. So, maybe the Guitar lives long enough for it to be worth it to repair. I basically use it as my alternate tuning beater, to try out some Goo Goo Dolls stuff or Rain Song - just so I'm not going too far from standard tuning on the Ovation.
Maybe that's the wrong way to treat it, but it's held up well as that secondary guitar so far. I would like to get a Taylor next year, but I'm not saving pennies fast enough. Between guns and guitars, there's only so much room in the house and in the budget. Mrs. Midnight's hobbies take up a lot of room, too, but aren't nearly as expensive as guns and guitars.

My baby is a 2015 Taylor 612ce. Maple back, sides & neck, Sitka spruce top, ebony fingerboard and Macassar ebony pick guard. It is specifically made for fingerstyle playing and that's what I bought it for. I have pics if you'd like to see.

I recently switched from Elixir Nanowebs to D'Addario EXPs on the recommendation of someone here on this forum. I'm on my first set but so far I like them a lot.

I used Elixirs I believe twice. They sound great right after restring but so do they all. They just didn't seem to last. Corroded more quickly?
They're coated and supposed to last longer, so I don't know. They sounded good though.

Elixirs are the stock strings for Taylors so I was using them by default. They seemed to last OK but I was having trouble with my G string breaking (phrasing!). So I thought I'd try a different brand to see if it was any better. I retune a lot because I play in all sorts of odd alternate tunings and I was breaking the string when retuning it.

1982 Takamine lawsuit Martin D-something or other copy. I love it. It's got a super-nice low end and it was a pawn shop find for $90.
Strings: Clapton model .12s. I think they're Martin Clapton's Choice.
If I got another acoustic, it would be a Guild M-20, F-20, or F-30.

1. My baby is my Greco SA-64-70. A Japanese replica of the 1964 Gibson ES-335. Mine was made in the 80's back when the Japanese were making absolutely fantastic guitars. Picture below is someone else's. I don't have any photos of mine.
2. Possibly... for the smaller bodied acoustics I just prefer Taylor.
3. The lawsuit guitars are also worth looking into. My Greco is also a lawsuit guitar. I believe Gibson sued, not for stealing the body style and completely replicating it, but they sued for open book style headstock.
4. D'Addario Jazz light gauge flat wounds. My personal favorite, although the 13's are probably the very best sounding string for jazz.

That's real nice for $90.
The one I saw was from 1977. Straight copy of a D-18. It is comical though, the way they did the headstock. How could they not be sued?

I've been using Elixir's on my Taylor for over 10 years. Never had one break and I change them twice a year. Are you sure you know how to tune your guitar?

It's probably more related to how I string it than how I tune it. Never had one break when tuning it down though. I thought that was kinda weird.

I think the headstocks on electrics generated more lawsuits than all other causes, combined. I could be completely wrong about that, though.

I've got a low end Guild DV-4.It serves it's purpose.Rosewood back and sides.Sitka Spruce top.

I've got a D-41 I got from Guitar Center about 10 years ago. Not sure if they'll still do this but that price may be fluid: the guitar was on the rack with a $4199 price tag. I offered $2500 cash, nothing more. Guy says "deal" and then calculates the tax, and I politely tell him "$2500 including tax"...he goes to the back for a second, comes back and agrees to the deal.
In my experience, they won't budge as much on the lesser expensive guitars but before you give up on the Martin or Taylor, see what can be done.
That JM model is super easy to play, fun guitar.
Also, I use Elixirs, but only the Polyweb (Nanoweb tone dies out too quickly)

I will have a Martin one day, but not until I feel I can play in front of people without them snickering.
I didn't even haggle on the Blueridge. I had looked it up and knew I had a good deal. I was just inspecting it. Thought it might have a jacked up top or cracks.
I am not a John Mayer, but am a fan of his signature Martin. Saw OM-28 I believe.
