I don't know a lot from Hooverphonic (2 Wicky ?) -- They sound a lot like Portishead (which is not a bad thing).
Cocteau Twins fan? I love Liz Fraser's voice. Most people I know just don't "get it." My favorite is "Carolyn's Fingers"

Neko Case. Finally saw her at a local music fest in Seattle this year.
I don't understand how she is still so obscure. Best alt-country voice around and damn good in The New Pornographers. Maybe it's the shirt incident at the "Grand Old Opry" that is holding her back.

Respect them... Like a few of their songs but not a regular listener. Would rather Kirsty Hawkshaw for my electo post-Manchester chick stuff (she's really cool and actually responds when contacted FWIW).
Have you seen Alison Moyet in the last year or so since she dropped all the weight? Talk about a voice... and Holy shite - I hope I've still "got it" when I'm pushing 50.
YAZOO - Don't Go (Live at the Short Circuit Festival, London, May 14, 2011)

Too lazy to google - Please explain. I'm intrigued.

This one is beautiful...

The short version is that Neko says she was REALLY hot on stage performing and took off her shirt (exposing her bra). The bible thumpers freaked out and Case was banned for life from the GOO. Their loss - morons.

That's awesome. Definitely their loss. She's one of those people who looks pretty average most of the time... and occasionally really smokin' in a hippy gypsy way.
ETA:
Case in point: Neko Case - Behind the House - Live at Austin City Limits 2006

That's the first time I have seen Alison Moyet in 20 years. Looks smokin hot for her age.
I remember her when the band was called Yaz (not Yazoo). I am around her "pushing 50" age too.

troubl, thank you for taking the time early this morning to make that playlist. I have listened to about half of the songs and I have enjoyed each one. I do so love music.
It does make me feel inadequate that my music knowledge is so limited. I am hearing these songs for the first time. I read a post that you made on the OT a while back (that was later edited) which makes me understand the breadth of your musical repertoire.
Thanks again to you and all who have broadened my musical horizons.

My pleasure. I keep adding to it... so check it anytime you're bored. I also have two other music-related playlists on my youtube channel. "Bug on the Wall Bucket List" is comprised of performances by artists I've never seen live (except for Cat Power... put her there by mistake and never removed). "Currently Stuck in My Head" is more modern EDM and rock-type stuff that's in my current rotation.
If any of the artists from any of those jump out at you - Let me know and I'll put more links/info to get you towards the best of whatever they've done.
Cheers.
ETA:
Regarding "Bug on the Wall" - I've also seen Peter Murphy a bunch of times live... but never with NiN.

Here's another one of my "bigger in Europe" favorites. She never got much support stateside outside of one or 2 albums 8-10 years ago.
Love this one: Sheila Nicholls - How Strong
Decent "Alternative" commercial success on this one: Sheila Nicholls - Faith

I finished listening to the entire playlist and really enjoyed it all. There is a lot of talent in that playlist. I think that Beth Orton, Sharon Van Etten and Neko Case were my favorites, but I need to listen to all again, because Heather Nova is a winner, too!
I did chuckle when I heard the lyric "Trouble is your middle name. . ." in "Mad About You".
I am a big fan of the piano and the simplicity of the piano and that great voice of Noémie Wolfs is pretty remarkable.
Now I have to listen to the rest of the links in this thread.

A quick top 5: Alanis, Avril, Shania, Stevie and Carly
One to grow on: Jackie Evancho

Her album Tramp will be on a LOT of Top 10 lists this year.

If Sheryl Crow and Jennifer Aniston had a child... It would look like Heather Nova.
Huge in Europe. Never got a lot of support in the US after her first two albums but has had great success overseas for the better part of 15 years.
Here's some more over the years and around the world:
Heather Nova - Stayin Alive (Live) (quirky little cover)
Heather Nova - Welcome (music video)
heather nova - throwing fire at the sun
Heather Nova, Walking Higher, De Spiegel Zwolle 4-10-'10
Heather Nova, Stop the fire, Suikerrock, Tienen, Belgium, July 30 2011
And finally this one where the vocals are just progressively more and more insane...
Heather Nova - 07 - Maybe An Angel - Baden Airpark - Germany - 28 Aug 1998

She is very pretty. I thought that all of the singers were pretty, though.
I just listened to the first two songs you posted and now see that you've added. I really do appreciate your work!

Last one and I'm done.... or I'll never stop.
Heather Nova - Wicked Game (Cover) - live 2010
ETA:
I've met/hung out with her a couple times (1998 and 2000). She's TINY... 5'2" a buck-ten soaking wet. Blows my mind when such big vocals come out of such a small person.
