Never really listened to Joplin much before.
Try this one, Maybe

I wonder how her voice would have aged, given how she sang with such an empowering, almost scratchy tone.
She drank a lot of Jack. But you are correct, when they did 2 shows in a day at Arena Stage, the back-up Janis would have to perform in one.

That is a song I can appreciate. I don't think I would listen to it to relax or anything, but it's quite obvious how strong her impact on music was. One thing that I noticed is how rough and "non innocent" she looked compared to the females in the audience.

No, Janis had an edge that could cut through steel.

She drank hard, drugged hard, lived hard, and died young. Sad really.

I've been getting back into some Roberta Flack lately.
Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

"Killing Me Softly" is one of my favorite songs. Nice!

I recently came across these guys and this particular song gets stuck in my head often.

I can see how that could happen. As I was listening I kept thinking that her voice reminded me of someone else, but I can't figure who.

And I love this song. Not entirely females but the vocals are great against Iommi's guitar.

Just finished listening. I think I grew up with the greatest music (was in H.S. from 1965-1969) but I really enjoy learning about new music.

That song reminds me a bit of "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw. And this song is nothing if not infectious. One of the best rhythms/backbeats in a song ever.

I've been digging the raspy 90's girl stuff, most notably k's choice and letters to cleo

Me too.
I first really listened to her when Central Reservation came out. Thought it was really interesting that she got her start with William Orbit... Like way back when he was doing intro music for Ozzy and stuff.
She's got such a unique voice.
Here's a recent live acousic version of "Stolen Car"

This is pretty good too: Hooverphonic - Mad about you (en live dans le Grand Studio)
Very minimalist compared to the dark electro/orchestral album version HERE. (not sure about the Little Shop of Horrors stuff going on in the video... What can you do? They're Belgian
)
I think a lot of the female artists I like fall into the category of "Music For Spies" or similar.

That's such a great song.
Speaking of unique voices, Sharon Van Etten's "Serpents" got under my skin for months earlier this year. I am sure you must know that song, too.

Very obsessed with that one for a while now.
Outstanding live version HERE.
ETA:
I love how Neko Case can be recorded in such a way that anybody but her woulda sounded shitty.
The awesomeness that is her voice still shines through.
(not many folks capable of making a catchy tune about the Green River killer)

I think there's a lot of Pretenders going on there (not a bad thing).
