My dad was part of those protests, though not the day the shootings happened. He was there the day before when they got tear gassed and he sensed it escalating so stayed home the next day when the shootings happened.

The only thing I can ever think about when I hear "Kent State" is the old "Can't Read. Can't Write. Kent State"
Legend of Kent Read/Write/State

I believe I've seen where he said he was on campus that day, but not protesting and did see the aftermath.
I always wanted to ask my dad more about it, but that was a pretty dark period of his life and talking about it always made him cry. His parents got divorced, his best friend died in Vietnam, he flunked out of Ohio State, and his girlfriend around that time died in a car accident, all within a span of a year that culminated with teh Kent St shootings. He and my mom rekindled things between them a few months after the Kent St incident.

I also prefer the Isley Brothers Ohio/Machine gun version.
