I have always held a distinction between rock & roll and rock. I am a bigger fan of rock than rock & roll, so many of the selections so far are great and some of my favorites, yet I just don't see them as rock & roll. I chose 5 songs that really defined the rock & roll genre for me. I don't believe there is a right and wrong here, just how I have always experienced it.

Does anyone else see a significant distinction between the two genres?

Yes, although I'm the opposite. I prefer rock and roll over rock.

At the time I heard them, my list would be:

Stones - Beast of Burden
It was the first Stones song I can remember hearing. I'm sure I had heard some of their other stuff, but that was the first of there's that I really heard.

SRV - Life Without You
It opened me more up to the blues than any other song that I can recall.

Gaslight Anthem - '59 Sound
This was probably the song that led to my discovery of more artists that I now love than any other, Tom Waits being my favorite.

Jimi - All Along the Watchtower
I don't have a lot to say about this one, but I was Jimisessed for a couple of years thanks to this one.

Stones - Wild Horses
I was 17 years old in a Mercury Cougar in a hotel parking lot in Water Valley, MS the first time I heard it. For 5 or so years I had really enjoyed the Rolling Stones, but it was always the songs Rock 104 would play, Gimme Shelter, Paint it Black, Satisfaction, etc. This was the first song I heard from them that didn't get airplay. I was mesmerized. I probably listened to it 20 times that day, and it is still in my top 5 songs of all time.

I fricking love classic rock. I could talk about songs, where I was when I first heard them, and how they have changed my musical tastes all damn day.

None of these are my favorites by that particular artist . But all resonated for me at a particular time in my childhood / earlier years and lead me to investigate further and are on my “ I’m shook” playlist .

Same here. My list is songs that grabbed me at a particular time and influenced the direction my interests took.
1. I Wanna Be Your Dog- Stooges
2. River Euphrates- Pixies
3. Bullet- Misfits
4. Baba O'Riley- The Who
5. For Whom the Bell Tolls- Metallica

Cheap Trick - Surrender
The Rolling Stones - Little T&A
Ramones - Judy is a Punk
The Clash - Janie Jones

Hard list... left off the Beatles, cause they were just always around growing up... all their songs.. not one in particular.. I could have also just picked 5 beach boys songs...

I know this is a song thread, but albums had more influence on me rather than a particular song. I listened to music much differently back in the day by putting on the album (vinyl), listening in toto, reading the album cover, lyrics, etc.

Machine Head - Deep Purple
Closer to Home - GFR
Yer Album - James Gang
Okie - J.J. Cale
In Search of the Lost Chord - Moody Blues
