Put down the Robert Smith Fan Club bong for a minute.
"Heluva year"? Compared to when? 1995?
My opinion:
Your 1985 BOTTOM ninety albums of also-rans listed as some kind of epic is turrible compared to the previous year ('84) -- and especially compared to 1983 and EVERY OTHER YEAR prior to '85. (1985 was a year for catchy singles but due to severe genre shake-ups and proliferation of "meh", not for the better.)
Frankly, 1985 was decent but the beginning of the end of true Rock artistry , creativity and musicianship.

Tim was quite the death knell. In many ways.

Laugh all you want, but in 1985 that album went quadruple palatinum.
Listening back to it today is some of the music cheesy? Yes. But back in the day it was a massive hit. I mean who can resist Jan Hammer rocking out on his keytar?

Jan Hammer was perfect 80's vibe for that. Don't care for Glen Frey but my favorite Tina song is on there even though it's a cover.
Oh yes, I'm touched by this show of emotion
Should I be fractured by your lack of devotion?
Should I?
Should I?
Let's go Tina!!!
And you know

Murphy's would go insane when this one hit.

Not gonna lie Jason and the Scorchers were never on my radar. I looked them up and it says they are a Cowpunk band. Which is something else that has never been in my radar
Of course I’ve heard Route 66.

To me, they were just rock with a twangy singer. Their cover of Absolutely Sweet Marie is outstanding.

Also, thanks for backing me on this thread

No it isn't. It means that, in its time, 4 million people like the album enough to spend their hard earned money on it.
Dismiss it all you want but here's the bottom line: people vote with their pocketbooks and wallets. And in this case more people voted for the Miami vice soundtrack than whatever you think is better.
In contrast, your #1 from that year, sold 500,000 copies.
And it took it 6 years to hit that number. Now don't mistake what I'm saying as me trying to say RRM wasn't good or I don't enjoy them. In fact Driver 8 off F.O.T.R. is one of my favorite REM songs. I'm was just pointing put what the "real" popular music of the time and conversely, what wasn't. That doesn't mean people's opinions of good and bad can't change over time. But it doesn't change what actically happened 40 years ago.

Huge year for concerts. I saw Madonna’s Like A Virgin tour in Atlanta, Live Aid concert in Philly, The Fixx in Germany and Journey, Simple Minds that year.

And Robert still sounds just as great (40 years later) as ever singing it Live recently

I think it was 1980, not a lot of airplay. Great song, though (NOT the Huey Lewis tripe).

Shut your filthy Huey Lewis-hating mouth.

Well that's good, because he looks even crappier than before...
