They seem like the odd man out. I don't have anything against them, saw them in concert a while back. Considering they were opening for another band, just seems a bit pre-mature to say they are destined for rock greatness.

Too low IMO. Their last few releases have really proven that they have come into their own.

I thought you said that I was retarded for choosing Rosetta Stoned to be Tool's greatest song...

First of all, the premise of the article is absolutely absurb to imply that simply because enough time has passed that a metal or hard rock group can now fit the category of 'classic rock'. As I have tried to explain before to other people, classic rock has a particular sound and is associated with an era that ranges anywhere from the late '60s to the '90s. I give some leeway on the end of the time frame because I believe that bands such as The Black Crowes and post-Mother's Milk Red Hot Chili Peppers can easily fall into this category based on their sound, style, and influences.
The Metallica example is absolutely dreadful. Just because 98.1 and other stations choose to play Metallica on occasion doesn't mean that the Four Horsemen are suddenly classic rock. The entire reason that Metallica began to receive airplay on The Eagle was due to the desolvement of 104.1 The X and Guaranty Broadcasting's attempt to absorb the audience from that sation (hence why you'll hear grunge, prog, and alternative rock bands such as Nirvanna, Radiohead, and Tool on 98.1 these days). Also, note the Metallica songs being played on most 'classic rock stations'. It's typically the band's watershed moment of their career (The Black Albumor Metallica). Obviously, this is when the band began to steer from a more agressive and thrash-based sound to something more along the lines of radio-friendly metal and hard rock. Yes, you might hear "Fade to Black" played every now and then but keep in mind that the song is a ballad that actually received a fair amount of radioplay when it was originally released.
I still don't hear tracks like "The Four Horsemen", "Ride the Lightning", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Sanitarium", or "Blackened" played on any 'classic rock' stations. If the idea that heavier bands become viewed as classic rock once a certain amount of time has passed then we would be hearing Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Overkill, Testament, Pantera, Sepultura, etc. played on mainstream radio. However, the fact remains that none of these bands have been featured on mainstream radio despite being highly respected among the metal community. Why? Because none of these bands ever truly departed from their extreme/thrash metal style of play and consequently remained too 'edgy' for most audiences.
The same could be said about the prog rock bands of the '70s. You will be hard-pressed to hear anything off of Genesis' first five albums, King Crimson, early Yes, or Emerson Lake and Palmer on the radio. Again, it's because this sort of music isn't highly accesible for a widespread radio audience.
As much as I love all of the bands listed in this article, I'm willing to bet that pretty much every one of these bands will never fit the label of 'classic rock' and sure as hell will never be played on mainstream radio. Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) and Mikael Åkerfeldt's (Opeth) vocals are far too harsh and inaccesible for most music fans.

I think what they mean by classic and your definition, and the wide regarded definition of classic rock are not the same thing.
But seriously TL;DR

That's a weird comment to throw after the Rosetta Stone convo.
Strange.
However, I think the feeling is mutual.

APC is good and definitely listenable. It's the feminine version of Tool, so I can understand why some people like APC more than Tool.

Agreed, the ladies love APC. That's why it's a hit at parties. Tool is for chicks that deliver pizzas, APC is for hot chicks that rock and roll
