Watching it right now. Pretty deep story the musican gave when he slit that Germans throat.

Rockie Blount! This guy was a tremendous story and I think we'll get more on him during the battle of the Bulge which I believe he participated in. You could tell he is continually haunted by having to kill that German Soldier with his knife.

The IWO Jima story was also intense. Reminds me of Afganistan in the way the Japanese soldiers had a huge tunnel system that was almost impervious to the air bombing we did for 72 days. Incredible. 24,000 US soliders died on IWO Jima.

So do you think this series will actually cover the bombing of HIroshima and Nagasaki?

I wasn't aware that this caused moral in the US to drop so badly. Never heard that before.

I never knew until I watched it that way more US soldiers died on Iwo Jima than on D-day in Normandy.

Man can you imagine the field day CNN would have every day with those kind of casualties number?

Its heartbreaking to comprehend the sacrifices that were NECESSARY to be made to fight the Evil of their day.

Damn, sounds like that scene in "Saving Private Ryan". Give your gramps a big thumbs up and thank you from me!

Yeh I remember watching that movie the first time. That scene took me straight to my Grandpaws story.

This documentary shows alot of dead bodies. More than any other WWII film I seen. Really shows the horror.

my father couldve been in the footage of the B-17s. He was in that 91st bomb group they showed and they also showed his base in Bassingbourn, England. The call signs on the side of the bombers were from his group too.

I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered them saying that there were 24,000 casualties, which would mean dead or wounded. The reason I think I remember them saying casualties is because I started to think how the word was aggravating me. For most of the battles they said casualties and this could mean a lot of things. Either way, death or being wounded is horrible, but if 5,000 soldiers died and 19,000 were wounded one way or the other, it's a different thing than 24,000 deaths. I just wish they would be more precise if they do in fact have the numbers.

It was deaths. out of 23,000 Japanese soldiers in IWO JIma, only 1,000 lived to tell about it and surrendered.

The AMericans lost 24,000 lives plus many many more wounded.

I know it's not a credible source, and I'm still looking, but on wikianswers they said

quote:

US casualties - 6,891 killed and 18,700 wounded

LINK

Battle of Iwo Jima Website

quote:

The tiny island had taken America over one month to take. The Marines lost 6,891 men killed and 18,070 wounded. Out of the 22,000 Japanese soldiers on the island, only 212 were taken prisoners. What the battle did show the Americans was how far the Japanese would go to defend their country – a decision that was to influence the use of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I felt really bad for the guy. You can tell he didn't want to do it but didn't really have much of a choice. I couldn't imagine doing something like that.

Could you imagine? I mean at the time it is do or die. But hands on killing up close, wow. Then shortly after when they were pushing close to Berlin and the Germans were surrendering, the US Soldiers told them to march to the back of the line for food and care. At that point the Germans thanked them, talked with them, showed photos of their families, etc. Became an average Joe per say. A guy you could have met in a bar at on time. Went from killing to almost pals. That has to play on ones mind.
The concentration camp scene was harsh. I couldn't imagine walking up on that. Civilians, piles of them. The ones alive were just haging on.
War is an ugly thing no doubt.

I got emotional while watching some parts of this program. The courage and straight up 'guts' these guys displayed is incredible.

The American public, during the war,had guts, as well.

I don't know how they could let the German soldiers march home. I mean if you are shooting at me and trying to kill me and we overtake you, I'm sorry but we can't shake hands and go our seperate ways. Especially after all the atrocities the Germans committed. I would have taken them as prisoners if I couldn't kill them.
