Would you agree with this, regarding SOPA?

I feel Hollywood priced themselves into the current online piracy situation.

There was a time when you would go to a movie to "see if it is any good". Meaning that you would go see movies you knew little about. It was an affordable way to spend an evening.

Now the theater experience is too expensive for many. Now the key demographics (12-17 & 18-35) are not willing to take a chance.

Therefore more people have taken to illegally downloading middling films.

It has also led Hollywood to avoid risky, original films, based on the above.

Just a thought I'd had.

I would agree. It has to be a major film for me, in my 20s, to go see a movie. Like inception, dark Knight level. I'm not spending 20 after gas a ticket and maybe a drink to see a damn movie. Double that if you've got a date with you. I'll just wait until it comes out on redbox and spend 1.50

I'd add that piracy became so rampant in response to rental pricing models, which also coincidences with the meteoric rise of Netflix around the same time. Outlets such as Blockbuster created a poisonous consumer attitude around the given distribution model. People were chomping at the bit for an alternative; and if it came with the added bonus of fricking over the industry that charged them 100 dollars for keeping Hard Target at their house for 8 days, all the better.

Agreed. Prices on movies are ridiculous. I saw a 3D movie recently at $15.00 per ticket. Plus popcorn ($8) and a drink ($6). It was nuts.

The $4 price for the smallest drink always bugged me.
It's like less liquid than a can of coke plus tons of ice.

What do they expect?

I laugh when people say they spend $75-$100 to see a movie with their kids.

You ever heard of a matinee? Why do you HAVE to buy a drink? Outside of one instance, I haven't purchased a beverage from a movie theater in over 5 years. Why do you HAVE to buy food there? If you are that hungry, sneak something in or better yet, eat before or after you go.

Better yet, stop going to Regal Theaters. I worked for Regal back in high school. Depending on the theater, their price, and the movie, they are making anywhere between $2 and $8 per movie ticket.

There is a theater that shows first run movies near me that charges just over $3 for matinees and tacks on $2.50 for 3D movies. I can see two 3D movies there for the price of one matinee at my Regal theater. I sneak drinks and candy in there all the time. Hell I've sneaked in a damn foot long sub sammich into a theater before and laughed my arse off at the guy down the row from me who spent $8 on a large popcorn.

Besides if it costs too much for you to take your kids to see Cars 2 or Toy Story, wait 3 months and buy the damn dvd for $20 when it comes out.

I saw The Muppets and War Horse back to back for less than what your popcorn cost.

BTW, some of the anger can be directed towards the federal government raising minimum wage. 5 years ago, minimum wage was $5.15 and now it's $7.25. Less assume that a theater only has 10 employees working at a time. Their labor costs went up by $21 an hour in less than 2 years as a result of someone else's actions.

There is a fairly unique economic inefficiency when it comes to theaters and their prices. And it's location.

Notice how you rarely see "competing" theaters really close to each other? Like Walgreens and CVS, Lowe's and Home Depot, grocery stores, etc.? The spacing removes the incentive to shop around and discourages competition. Perhaps some of that is demand-driven but relative lack of competition within a given area is a side-effect in any case.

I see what you are saying and there is a point to that.

There are theaters were I live that are less than 5-6 miles from each other, but one of the reasons why they like to space each other out is because they don't want you to go another theater if the showtime to the movie you want to see is sold out. They want to keep you there and have you go to see either another movie or better yet, see another movie now and go ahead and pay for your ticket to the next movie.

Check on Fandango or check the theater's parent website.

Nice. I walked into the Regal Theater near me last year before Alice in Wonderland with a cup full of tea from Subway. Little usher kid told me I wasn't allowed to have that I told him I know. He told me to pour it out and I told him I'm passing a kidney stone. I kept my damn drink.

There is a Walgreens right behind one of the theaters. $1 for my Arizona Tea and a $1 for a box of candy.
