DiCaprio, Oldman, Cruise, Gibson, Hoffman, Kingsley to name a few top 10 for me. Gonna get hate and downvotes for 1,3, and 4 but they have all shown versatility. Pioneers always take the arrows, settlers take the land, so the more exposure, the more detractors. I just call it like I see it

I forget about gary oldman. One of my all time favorites.

Movie Star Yes. Actor, no.

There are dozens of actors that I put ahead of Hanks in terms of pure acting skillset.

im genuinely curious who other people have at the top. It’s all subjective so no one can argue.

In the recent years I would have DDL, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christian Bale and probably Denzel above him if we’re talking about who’s the better actor. Comparing resumes would be a different story

So you can name - at the very minimum - at least 24 actors you say can act better than Hanks?

Depends on your time frame. Maybe in the last twenty years. The era of hot movie stars is changing. Now streaming platforms are in demand and compete in someways with cinema. So there are all sorts of artists working a myriad of platforms now. Tom Hanks was good and bankable and because he made money for the studios, they used him over and over again. Some of his stuff was great.

But I can think back to an earlier time and Charlton Heston and he was a great actor also. You younger guys probably don't even know who he is.

Remember Dustin Hoffman? And though commonly a character actor, Robert Duval is about as good an actor as there can be.

List isn't legit without Bachelor Party and The 'Burbs. Two comedy greats

Easily. Men I personally consider better actors, not necessarily box office draws are

1) Laurence Olivier
2) Robert DeNiro
3) Jimmy Stewart
4) Cary Grant
5) Marlon Brando
6) Peter O'Toole
7) Peter Sellers
8) Michael Caine
9) Robert Duvall
10)Johnny Depp
11)Gene Hackman
11)Sean Connery
12)James Dean
13)Gary Oldman
14)Gary Cooper
15)RDJ
16)DDL
17)Bruce Willis
18)Mel Gibson
19)Tom Cruise
20)Paul Newman
21)Dustin Hoffman
22)Anthony Hopkins
23)Leonardo Di
24)Al Pacino
25)John Gielgud
26)Ben Kingsley
27)Alec Guiness
28)David Niven

Definitely

Off the top of my head....

Nicholson
Pacino
Bale
De Niro
DiCaprio
Jimmy Stewart
Cary Grant
William Hurt
Ed Harris
Viggo
Brando
Duvall
Benicio Del Toro
Javier Bardem
Toshiro Mifune
Klaus Kinski
Shimura
Olivier
Guiness
Sellers
Brando
George C. Scott
DDL
Hoffman
Hopkins
Newman
Bogart
Gene Hackman
Gary Oldman
Richard Burton
Ralph Fiennes
Welles
Depardieu
Pitt
O'Toole

And I could keep going Mads Mikkelson, Schell, Delon, etc. And I'm not even including women yet....

Hanks is right there with Willis, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, RDJ, Russell Crowe. Great movie stars with stand out performances, but range is smaller than what I would call "greatest actors." RDJ or Ford might belong in the above.

Hanks is easily Top 50 all time. They've been making movies for over 100 years. In a hundred year history if you are easily in the top 50 you are one of the best actors all time.

This thread gets kicked around every year or so. Hanks is unbelievable. He's funny, charismatic, deep, able to change into the character to a degree that most actors can't despite not being Mr. Method. He's in the Mount Olympus of actors.

People will say DDL is better, but he isn't. He does a particular thing particularly well. The only one who is better, imo, because he has the same range while also generally being more than himself is PSH. Although Hanks is a movie star and PSH was an actor, so there's a difference there.

Of the movie stars out there, I can't think of a better actor. He can (or could) carry a film by himself (literally). That's star power. DiCaprio is as big a star, maybe bigger, but he doesn't have the range of Hanks. I think you really do have to go back to the greats of yesteryear to find one to match. Stewart is certainly one of them.

I mean I get liking the guy, and Method isn't the only way, but his range is slim despite the funny charismatic piece (which is what makes him a great movie star).

And this is where Hanks threads go sideways. DDL has at least 4 performances head and shoulders above anything Hanks has done.

I guess it depends on the interpretation of
