When Tom Hanks was known as just a comedic actor with Bossum Buddies, Bachelor Party, Splash, The Money Pit, Volunteers...
He did Nothing in Common with Jackie Gleason.
The movie was a serious role while Hanks was just known as a comedic actor. And one note...look at the above movies, they're all the same. Loud wise-arse with over-the-top reactions.
Nothing in Common was the coming out party for Hanks as a versatile actor.
Gleason said after working with him: "this guy is going to be a star he's so talented."

He is certainly one of the best of all time.
I watched Cast Away last night, and he is brilliant in that movie.

I would put him in the same category as Jimmy Stewart so yeah probably

His resume speaks for itself. He’s a legend and on the short list. I don’t think I’d personally put him number one overall, but he’s high up there.

DDL is my #1
Seymour-Hoffman and Robin Williams up there.
Tom Hanks would definitely be top 10, which is one of the best. He might have the best resume overall too.

He's easily one of the best of all time. Is he the best of all time? No. Because there is no best of all time.
Different times and different tastes require different skills.
Acting onstage in 1890 with The Divine Sarah Bernhardt Hanks would have been obliterated by the juggernaut of classical stage training Sarah had at her disposal. In a modern movie Bernhardt would come across as so gloriously over the top William Shatner would tell her to tone it down.
That having been said, give him a few years and I'm sure Hanks would have adapted to stage performing in the 1890s and I'm certain that the undefeated master of self promotion Sarah Bernhardt would be crushing fools at the box office once she caught up to speed if she was alive now.
I do hope that Hanks gets the chance to star in a super hero movie, as odd as that may sound. He has stated a few times he'd dearly love to play a super villain at some point in his career and I for one would love to see him give it a try.

He is definitely featured star in a raft of modern movies. Kind of like Cary Grant or John Wayne type actor - in that you always know it is him in whatever role he may be playing.

Jack Nicholson
Tom Hanks
Marlon Brando
That’s a damn fine list.
I’d agree with all of those in a top 10 and add Denzel, Oldman, and my personal #1 Paul Newman.
I also love Cruise and Gibson that have been mentioned here as well.

Tommy Lee Jones is up there for me also.

No ... but he is top ten
Isn't that the same as saying he is one of the best??

Yes.
I’d say he’s top 5. I think my cousin Danial Day Lewis and cruise are in the top 5 as well.

Not many actors could pull off Cast Away. Hanks was the only character that you see for 80% of the movie.

Cast Away gets hated on so fricking much as an overall movie
It does?

Yes. I concluded this in 1994, when "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia" were released. Incredibly talented, versatile actor. Can pull off dramatic and comedic roles.

He's likable. Made the right sorta friends and has good representation but that's about it.
Other actors for instance turned down the gump role before it was ever offered to him.
The role that really got the ball rolling though was "splash" and i think that was originally offered to john travolta.
Big big movies but not much range as an actor at all. He did manage to not go full retard though.
The best actor that comes to mind for me right now is christian bale. His scenes in american psycho should be looped over and over again in a museum.
