It's not just story, it's the spectacles they passed on.

If they do try to franchise it, they passed the Early Warning and Great Panic segments of the book in this movie, which probably had some of the best parts IMO. It all kinda winded down in the Total War part.

As you presumably haven't read the book, let me detail Yonkers that is referred to in this thread:

It is a couple of weeks after the outbreak really broke out, and the setting is a suburb of New York. There to rebuild morale and confidence the military throws EVERYTHING they had at the infestation of zombies as they tried to leave New York.

Sharpshooters, Apache and Commanche choppers, Abrams main battle tanks, MLRS artillery, jet launched JSOWs....and long story short, they were overrun. The patches of survivors buttoned up in whatever armored vehicle they could get into, APCs, Bradleys, etc, while a fuel air bomb was dropped in the hope that it would create an opening for a retreat.

Which would result in the draw back of the military and Americam government to behind the Rockies, where they attempted to draw a defensive line behind which they had an isolated area which they secured.

Leaving lots and lots of people behind.

Don't you think that would have been awesome to see? Even if they incorporated it into the Fall of Isreal?

I want to say it was for budget reasons it didn't happen, but it's not like there was a dearth of high end shots.

As far as I know, no movie has had a formal set piece battle between organized military units and zombies.

Would have been an awesome "frontier" to see breached.

They don't have any mention of the "un-ending clips" and defensive squares in the movie?

Plan on seeing it at some point.... maybe dvd.

Nope.

They had one bit of dialogue that I thought was about to reference the Tiger, but they didn't go there.

They did reference the SSV Ural though, although it was a US/UN command ship.

Specifically the recieving of harrowing transmissions. Although they didn't make an emotional production out if it

Nope, although the suits would have happened later.

They skipped all of the iconic Great Panic elements.

Oh, and the process of major outbreak to turning of the tide was less than a week

So no mad rush north only to starve to death, no major climate changes, etc.

It's all about Brad Pitt world touring to save it.

And he does it to come home to a homely British woman, not even Angelina Jolie.

That actually sounds like it would've fit. If they had time.

I know.

Its the main exclusion that annoys me.

They could have played it with the family's run to safety rather than have them get picked up by a helicopter.

Perfect somber tone of how dire the situation is rather than the apartment complex sequence. Would have prefaced the command ship shots perfectly.

Holy frick....and to make it worse, the budget for the movie was 200 million.

What were they thinking with a script like this without eye candy to make up for it?

No wonder the film has such a huge budget only to be a mess.

It was a huge clusterfrick of development.

And yes, they actually shot the big military scene:

quote:

Several of the scenes shot in Budapest, including a large-scale battle with the zombies in Moscow's Red Square, were dropped from the final cut in order to water down the film's political undertones, and steer it towards a more generally friendly summer blockbuster. The climactic battle scene in Russia, for which there was 12 minutes of footage, had Pitt's character fighting through zombies more like "a warrior hero" than "the sympathetic family man" of the earlier acts.

this was the best movie I've seen in a while. A true blockbuster.

Superman was good. But this was really good.

and it still feels like the movie ends when they realized they ran out of money.

when it hit that the movie was about to wrap up, i was speechless. they had just about won me over, and then just shut it down without much of anything.

I pretty much let go of this movie involving much of the book months ago. Like some have said, up until they left Israel, I enjoyed the movie as a zombie movie that reminded me of 28 Weeks, but the plane crashed and so did the movie.

On a positive note, the zombies really weren't as bad as we thought they'd old be outside of the ant hill and overturned bus. When we saw the first preview, we thought they would be I Am Legend bad.

Anybody catch the mention of organ donations as a possible cause and what could be a lead to patient zero?

Yeah, other than the way too fast conversion rate the zombies worked pretty well IMO.
