Mr. Rogers and Captain Kangaroo

Remember watching Captain Kangaroo every morning before school. Would sit down in the floor and eat my cereal in front of the TV. And Mr. Moose would drop ping pong balls on him.

And Mr. Rogers came on when I got home from school. Right before Leave it to Beaver came on over on Channel 3.

Much more excited about this than the one with Tom Hanks playing him

Not to hijack from this doc which looks like it will be outstanding, but I’m hopeful for the Hanks biopic.

I agree he may not seem like the perfect cast, but he does have the gravitas to play such a monumental figure like Rogers, and also the wholesome and optimistic aura as well.

I’m also hopeful that his weight as a producer will give the project the budget and respect it deserves because the writer/director team aren’t heavy hitters at all. That doesn’t mean they aren’t talented and can’t do a good job telling his story, but with Hanks’ name attached, they should have any resources needed to give this icon the proper level of respect in bringing him to the big screen.

As for casting, though, I’ve always thought David Straithairn could have given a fantastic portrayal:

Unfortunately, shows like Mr Rogers and Reading Rainbow aren't seen as valuable by those who could make them happen.

Or Romper Room.

Mister Rogers was about real world knowledge and empathy.

But unfortunately, when that Seasame Street study came out slamming the show and saying 30 years of research shows that it doesn't teach kids at all or help them learn anything...that "educational entertainment" was just entertainment created a loss of funding for public broadcasting outside of adult documentaries.

The prevailing attitude was accurately summed up by Homer Simpson when he was chased by PBS.

Homer pledges $10,000 so they will stop interrupting his show and going back to the pledge drive and he's praised for saving public television.

It's an honor to give $10,000 especially now, when the rich mosaic of cable programming - has made public television so very, very unnecessary.

But then he reneges.

I’ve been watching some Mr Rogers clips for the past 30 minutes, and if there is a God, I hope he’s exactly like Mr Rogers. A very special and wonderful man who made the world into a better place than he came into it. Here’s his last message to his fans before passing away: LINK

I’m almost sure I’ll be crying buckets if this documentary is even passable.

Easily one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Also not trying to get this sent to PT but his story was told in a manner that talked about faith, politics and social issues in a way that didn't takes sides. Make sure you have some tissues around when watching, especially if you have and love kids.

Well just got out of an early morning show, and I did. And it wasn’t passable, it was great. Everyone should go see this documentary. I still can’t comprehend how someone like Fred Rogers existed. We need someone like him in today’s incivility.

I think so, it's been out for weeks. Check on Fandango for where/when it is playing.
