It had amazing production values.

Which sounds like I am damning with extremely faint praise but part of the fun of the Lord of the Rings was just how much detail they put into the setting. To their credit, right up until the final few episodes where everyone just wanted to put this thing to bed, the costumes, setting, and cinematography were top notch.

It was, for the most part, extremely well acted. Yes, some of the actors, who I shan't mention, weren't up to par but a series starring Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and every character actor in the UK is going to feature some damn fine acting.

Which helped to cover up the fact that some of the writing was notso hotso. There are some actors out there that can make reading names out of phone book seem thrilling and GoT was loaded with those actors.

Is it an all time great? That depends on what you like and don't like about a TV show. People consider The Wire to be one of the best TV shows of all time but its creator has said it doesn't hold a candle to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Is he wrong? Well not in his eyes.

If you really liked it, then its an all time great. If you thought it sucked diseased moose wang then it isn't going to make your list.

We shall see how it stands the test of time. MASH was beloved, nay, worshiped, in its time and now modern fans who try to watch it probably find it overtly preachy. What is popular now may not be popular twenty years from now.

GOT is a solid 3 seed. They are Sweet 16 material imo.

Sopranos is still the #1* overall seed for me. They are making more finals appearances than any other show.

Sometimes shows become so well remembered because they were short, and never had a chance to jump the shark or see any drop in quality.

Firefly - if it had been 5-6 seasons, would it be as beloved? I have no idea, but for "once and done" shows, it would be damned hard to top.

Some sitcoms, like Cheers and Fraiser, go on forever and people still tuned in.

Some shows with long plot lines got worse after the initial plot lines were resolved and the network asked for more seasons (like Babylon 5).

Greatest shows ever is a hard thing to say. Is it based on long running? Then Grey's Anatomy would be up there, but I don't know how many people would call it that. Is it the number of shows that spin off of it? The Happy Days comes to mind. Is it one that builds the largest fandom despite having a small original run? Then you have Star Trek (original series was only 3 seasons).

Way too many targets and criteria.

Itll be another case of HBO fumbling on the 5 yard line before crossing the line on an 80 yard, un-touched run.
