Hopefully they walk back in during the naked miner scene

Both of their scenes were perfect. It really highlights how bad lives were there. Those dudes knew exactly what was going to happen to them despite all of the propaganda, and consciously decided it couldn't be worse than their every day lives and said frick it. At least we can save some lives.

Did anyone else initially read this as "Wife and MILF"?

It is honestly one of the best mini series shows I’ve ever seen

I'm half way through and agree with this. Free HBO preview let me record a lot of stuff including Chernobyl. It really does a great job of capturing what life was like for the people involved. They are real people in a crappy system and terrifying situation. Most acquit themselves well, even heroically. Others (especially bureaucrats) not so much.

The response to the diver who asked "why should I volunteer?" makes me respect and fear the resolve of the Ukrainian.

Most likely that and probably convenience. It doesn’t ruin the show for me at all, but I look at it the same way as I would if they made Narcos with a British Pablo Escobar.

They have a Chernobyl podcast with the showrunner. He talked about how there was some back-and-forth with whether or not they should do the accents and if it would hurt the authenticity of the series.

Eventually they settled on not doing them, since they thought it would distract the audience and make it harder to connect with the actors. The actors could just worry about putting their best performance and not having to worry about a shitty russian impression (which is the accent done terribly most often IMO)

re: Wife & MIL shopping until 12am. Think I will watch Chernobyl
After reading part of this thread a couple of days ago I watched Chernobyl in two nights.

I was up until midnight last night finishing it.

Wow.

I'm old enough to remember when it happened. The rest of the world had no idea how bad it really was. Well, the governments probably did towards the end. But the general public didn't.

I've been thinking about it today, and I don't think there's another culture of people that are tough enough to do what had to be done in that situation.

To be a Russian is to suffer. They live in a brutal environment. They have been enduring suffering for thousands of years.

They say hard times breed hard men. Well the whole history of Russia is a history of hard times. That makes from some tough SOBs. Life doesn't have the same value to a Russian. Honor and public impression are far more important.

Those miners, those three divers, the guys on the roof. They KNEW they were walking in to a grisly suicide situation.

And they did it anyway.

I don't know that any other culture, except maybe the Kamikazes of Japan would be that tough.

I don't think Americans could handle it.

Safer to conclude the target audience is illiterate
