Who Should Direct El Chapo: The Movie? Update in OP

A poor Mexican farm-boy rises to become a billionaire and the most powerful drug lord in the world, twice escapes from high-security prison, and is ultimately brought down by his love interest in a Mexican actress (and Sean Penn, I guess).
Seems to check all the boxes for a classic Scorsese film (celebrity, drugs, fame, fortune, gangs, violence, etc.), but he's getting up in years. Bigelow, Coens, Fincher, Soderbergh? I've liked everything JC Chandor has done as well. Doesn't seem like the Christopher Nolan type.
Who would you take? It's a great story, worthy of a great director. For me, if Scorsese's not up for it, I might have to go Kathryn Bigelow, even if the ending is similar to Zero Dark Thirty.
Update:

quote:Ridiculous. This story deserves better.
Sony is hoping to bag a similarly big-name director, with Michael Bay at the top of the studio’s list of most wanted.

As long as Idris Elba plays him.

I probably won't watch until they come out with an all black female version.

Benicio Del Toro
My vote is for John Leguizamo, but I believe he is already playing Pablo Escobar.

This many replies and no suggestions for Nolan to do a really dark version that totally mindfricks your view of drug lords?

Seems out of Nolan's element, but everything he does is good. So I would definitely watch.
