My undoubtedly unpopular opinion is The Dude

He’s good for a couple memorable, yet not that funny quotes, but overall John Goodman prompted like 75% of my laughs in this movies, which weren’t all that many to begin with.

I’ve watched The Big Lebowski 3 times now and I still don’t find it all that great. Each time I think I’m gonna appreciate it more, but I just don’t.

My choice?

Yeah, that’s what I mean. Is him saying “Well that’s just like your opinion, man.” funny?

Yes. Yes it is. Does it deserve to be quoted 10 million times per day? No.

Edit: You do realize The Dude is the straight man to Walter, right? You're supposed to laugh at the torture Walter puts The Dude through.

I didn’t realize anyone ever considered him an incredible character.

Gosling from Drive.

This place creams themselves with this movie. It’s not hard to act emotionless. Shitty actors do it everyday.

And he was completely miscast. Don’t write a script about a loner that doesn’t care about anything then cast a pretty boy with perfect hair that takes 30 minutes to style. Give me an overweight, unshaven Benicio del Toro that speaks in broken English, and I’ll believe that role.

I’ll join you in the downvotes, Big Lebowski just doesn’t do it for me either. I get that it’s gods gift to cinema and it’s untouchable, but it’s not something I ever find myself wanting to watch.

Jesus, first The Dude and now the Driver.

In film noir, the protagonist is supposed to be aloof and emotionless. It's the surreal series of events that happen to them and their unflapping integrity in the face of these trials that makes the stories of film noir engaging.

...Then again, if people are genuinely labeling these characters as "incredible," maybe that is a problem in and of itself. These characters are stock characters that have existed since before Dashiell Hammett. There's really not too much "incredible" about them. It's the overall mood and atmosphere that makes those movies great.

Edit: And these characters tend to be handsome men. (Notable exceptions being the disheveled Elliott Gould in The Long Goodbye [1973] and the aforementioned Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski [1998]).

Who said anything about incredible?

The lead in Drive should have been rough and rugged. Not perfect hair and pressed clothes.

I was making a point about people making the extreme opposite point that you were making. Specifically, that these performances aren't meant to be "incredible." The protagonist of film noir is a stock character that gets duplicated, with slight twist, movie after movie.

Again, you can make slight twist to the character that make the performance stand out from previous performances. In the case of Drive, it was a more glamorous interpretation.

Fair point.

But I was replying to OP. And I think Gosling’s character was very overrated in Drive.

I finally watched it recently because I knew I was missing something great.

Made it half way and turned it off.

It’s quite popular so I guess I’m missing something but I just didn’t like it.
