Obviously since it’s a historical show we already sort of know what happens but still do you root for the English or the Vikings?

For me it was easy early on to root for Ragnar, now that he’s dead, plus Floki, Lagetha, and Bjorn aren’t really involved in the fight I’m torn.

On the one hand I don’t want to “switch sides” and start pulling for the English, plus there aren’t really any likeable characters on the English side (maybe Alfred will become one since he is “the great”).

On the other hand, I don’t really care at all about any of Ragnar’s other sons, and I’ve found Ivar to be pretty unlikeable, not just for killing his brother and brutally torturing people but just in general.

I know he becomes a famous Viking figure but I wouldn’t hate it if he died a painful death, he doesn’t have near the charisma of his father.

I don't think you're supposed to like him. He's successful because he's so brutal. He's so brutal because he's got a huge inferiority complex which makes him unlikeable.

I really think they should have done the kids as a time shifted spinoff series rather than part B of the main series. We did not get enough of the Ragnar/Rolo/Lagertha era.

So who are we supposed to like now?

I think you've put your finger on the reason why I don't have the same interest level in the show I did in the first 3 seasons. One obstacle to the story telling is they're trying to halfway stay true to history. That's the entire reason they shifted to the sons in the first place.

I miss Rolo the most. He was my favorite non-Ragnar/Lagertha character.

Good observation. Ragnar was obviously the protagonist when he was there. It hasn't been clear at all if there is one now.

I think the way they handled the historical factor in The Last Kingdom is a good way to avoid this kind of dilemma. By establishing a (fictional) character who interacts with all the different major historical figures as the protagonist, they are not hobbled when said major figures die.

Watch "Last Kingdom". It's a series put out by BBC/Netflix and it is really good. It shows the English side of the Viking issues and trying to make one Britain. I can't wait for the next season to come out.

I’ve always rooted for Rollo. And I know from history that things turn out well for him.

I agree Last Kingdom does a better job blending history with fiction, but it’s unfair to compare them. Last Kingdom is based on an established book series from a master historical fiction writer.

I agree though, i didn’t like how Ragnar went awol for a decade and then turns up and dies. We could’ve had more Ragnar stories. Was anyone clamoring for less Ragnar and more of his sons? I like Bjorn a lot. Maybe the Ragnar actor wanted to do something else, career-wise. I know he was in Warcraft.
