Orson Welles with Citizen Kane was mentioned on the CNN series The Movies.

I understand some people have this opinion, but the vast majority would pick Pulp Fiction.

If you’re discussing American cinema, that’s the only answer.

Was going to say Spielberg with Jaws, but apparently he had other films prior. George Romero with Night of the Living Dead, Tarantino with Reservoir Dogs, Harold Ramis with Caddyshack are contenders for me.

Truffaut's first feature film was The 400 Blows and Godard's first feature film was Breathless so both of those guys have a good argument but it's hard to go against Welles and Citizen Kane.

Some personal faves by first time directors—-The Coen Brothers started well with Blood Simple. James Brooks- Terms of Endearment. Warren Beatty- Heaven Can Wait.

He wrote True Romance, didn't direct.

He didn't direct True Romance, just the writer. And it was after Dogs

Outside of the ones already mentioned, Chazelle with Whiplash is one of the best debuts in more recent years

Billy Bob for Sling Blade in recent times is a strong effort.
