Dr Mann is my most hated movie character of all time.
He’s in the conversation for me, for sure.
He has relatively little screen tine too, you spend maybe like 20 minutes with him in the movie? it even that long...
Swift and critically important, just like everything that happens in interstellar, except for the gravity thing.

I seem to remember the black astronaut being alone for a long arse time even longer than dr Mann. Then Dr Mann lectures him about being alone and the guy is just standing there like it is news to him.

I really think the movie would have been better if they simply cast Bryan Cranston as Dr Mann. I just can’t buy that Matt Damon could convince 13 people to go on a suicide mission with him. I’d have no problem buying Walter White doing that
But he’s not Walter White, he’s Dr. Mann which Damon plays to perfection.

Dr Mann was supposed to be the greatest scientist ever. He had a reputation to uphold and couldn't be seen lying and possibly dooming all of mankind just to save himself.
This is my view as well. He had a legacy that he didn't want tarnished. Remember the praise he gets when they are first describing the mission and all of the astronauts that went out searching. They were using words like great and brave to Dr. Mann.

Where was he planning to go?

1) one of the other potential planets that was being scouted.
2) home.
3) literally anywhere else besides spending forever sleeping on the planet he was on.

What happened to the other off screen astronaut that landed at the planet that Anne Hathaway’s character ends up on?

He’s just way too pathetic for me to possibly buy that he convinced 13 other people to go on a suicide mission with him. Forget who he turned out to be in the movie itself.

Pretty sure he died

He had to have died, they showed her marking a grave in that final sequence.

The will to survive made him compromise what morales he had into falsifying data in hopes of being rescued
Freaking great role for Damon.

Landslide brought him down.

How was he supposed to know which planets were habitable?

He probably didn't know, but it didn't matter... his was not habitable and he needed to be rescued. mostly #3 is your answer.
I repeat. He was at the point of sleeping forever, unless someone answered his beacon.
He didn't need to know which planets would be habitable, to get to a specific destination, or even if the human species still had hope for survival...He just didn't want to sleep forever on that rock.

He would know once he was in the docking station and then find out about the fuel/distance issues.

Yea I mean that is true too, but even then its not important to his betrayal in the first place. He had 3 options being
1 - signal the beacon for rescue and go to sleep hoping rescue comes (maybe you have to sabotage after maybe you just get rescued because all problems have been solved.). 2 - sleep forever.
3 - die.
He chose option #1 and it almost worked except he wasn’t aware of the docking issue thing. He could have easily just accepted being rescued but he didn’t have “love + gravity” he just had the desire to survive. Theme of the movie being survival for survival’s sake vs love and stuff guiding fate or something.

His odds of survival would have improved had he tried to work with them.

But then he has to live with the shame of what he’s done.
