I don't really consider it geeking out if the movie was good. For movies that I was super hyped before they came out and then let down afterwards, it has to be these two:

Masters of the Universe
Transformers: The Movie

I was born in 1959, so here's a list, with IMDb links, from before we watched VHS tapes at home. I saw all of these in the theater. Most at least twice.

Great Kids movies from the 60's, and early 70's were pretty limited. The three I really remember liking are:

The Incredible Journey (1963)
Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
The Jungle Book (1967)

I saw a bunch of entertaining adult movies back then too.

Bonnie and Clyde (1967) was the coolest movie ever when I saw it. A naked lady at the beginning, and the ambush at the end. We loved it as kids.

Planet of the Apes (1968) was one we talked about all the time. It was unlike anything before it. The Statue of Liberty scene was amazing.

Blazing Saddles (1974) inspired us with the N word, lots of cussing, and the campfire fart scene.

Could almost do a list of just war movies my brothers, and I saw back then.

Patton (1970) had great tank battles, Cool Germans, the slap, and the opening speech.

The Great Escape (1963) had the guys from different countries banding together, and the Steve McQueen motorcycle jump!

The Dirty Dozen (1967) gave us the funny war games scene, Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin in German unis, Maggot, and Jim Brown slamming grenades into those hatches on the run.

The Guns of Navarone (1961) Had those huge canons, lots of cool German stuff, Greg Peck, plastic explosives, and the cool boat horns at the end.

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) Must have seen it at the drive in. We loved for the guys whistling the Colonel Bogey March. It was the Comet song to us. "Comet, will make your teeth turn green. Comet, takes just like gasoline. Comet, will make you vomit. So get some Comet, and vomit today." Drove my parents nuts with that.

Von Ryan's Express (1965) may have been the one I liked best as a kid. It had snooty Englishmen, Cool German uniforms, Messerschmitts attacking trains, a hot Italian chick, and Sinatra with an MP 40 submachine gun.

Was a big fan of the Spaghetti Westerns too. Saw Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), For a Few Dollars More (1965), Fistful of Dollars (1964), but My Name Is Nobody (1973) may have been my favorite as a kid.

Damn ... after reading this thread I really feel old but I was major George Reeves, Adventures of Superman, geek as a kid.

Wore a towel as a cape, tried to fly off the roof of the house and broke my leg, the whole nine yards.

As far as movies go ... Superman and The Mole Men captivated me as did 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The War of the Worlds (embedded a survival mentality in me), Forbidden Planet, ... and The Boy With Green Hair (and the Nat King Cole song that accompanied the movie) stuck with me forever.

The closest movies that come to mind are Grind and Christmas Vacation during high school.

Explorers.

I wanted to "discover" a way to build and control a spaceship like they did so bad as a kid. It's the reason I learned computer programming.

The last star fighter
Robot jox
Spaced Invaders
Willow

There was a real cheesy movie called "gladiator". But it was in space .. and it was the last human fighter fighting some weird alien gladiators..
The last was like a cyborg minotaur.

I also loved the Muppets movies
