God I hope this doesn't turn into a "Les is winning with Saban's players" never-ending meme.

I can think of a couple posters here who are probably cooking up a false narrative in their head that they are going to push as fact for the next 5 years at minimum.

AT&T destroys everything it touches. They ruined Directv and they'll ruin HBO.

It's in their nature. Bet on companies like Netflix and Amazon to win the TV wars... Independent companies that don't have to answer to a traditional Conglomerate suits in the vein of IBM.

ATT is going to screw it up beyond imaginable

quote:

“It’s going to be a tough year,” Mr. Stankey said. “It’s going to be a lot of work to alter and change direction a little bit.”

quote:

Continuing the theme, he added: “I want more hours of engagement. Why are more hours of engagement important? Because you get more data and information about a customer that then allows you to do things like monetize through alternate models of advertising as well as subscriptions, which I think is very important to play in tomorrow’s world.”

quote:

Mr. Stankey also said that the network’s number of subscribers — 40 million in the United States, out of 142 million worldwide — was not going to cut it. HBO will have to find a way “to move beyond 35 to 40 percent penetration to have this become a much more common product,” he said, referring to its current market size.

Netflix can’t sniff HBO jock when it comes to original content.

Watchmen was awesome

It was but to be fair they were talking about multi season shows, and at this point the show runner has no interest in a follow up season to Watchmen

Sure, but they've had the same head of programming since 2016. CEOs don't usually personally greenlight shows. Reed Hastings is the CEO and public face of Netflix, but Cindy Holland was greenlighting the shows, until last week. I'm sure there are exceptions.

Also Plepler was with time Warner for 27 years; he was HBO CEO from 2013 to 2019.

series:

Entourage
Sopranos
The Wire

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Oz

True Blood
Boardwalk Empire
Six Feet Under

Shows that are still being produced which will keep going for a while

Westworld
Barry
Insecure
High Maintenance
Perry Mason
Lovecraft Country

Just because you're not a fan of their current productions, doesn't mean HBO isn't the best at producing quality programming.

Lovecraft Country is one of the best shows on television. Other than that, I’m not really sure what they have for originals currently airing.

At this point it's quality vs quantity. Netflix just pours stuff out every month.

Out of all of the new streaming services, HBO Max impresses me the most.

Succession and Barry the currently ongoing ones I’ve watched. Thru 2 seasons Succession is a tier 1 show so far imo
Chernobyl was excellent
