They make a great 1st season of programming.

Then it gets over with an audience, and instead of the people who made it successful continuing to move forward..the success draws attention from everyone, and everyone there has to micromanage, give input and make it "acceptable to a wider audience"..or AKA shooting themselves in the foot.

The most accurate comment. But many on this board will downvote it.

AT&T happened. Cleaned out senior management. Merged w other divisions.

Wanting higher penetration means lowering the quality of programming. Seen it happen over and over. USA, TNN, etc.

This show is awesome so far. I can't believe they relegated it to HBO Max. It's definitely good enough to be on regular HBO.

Might want to get used to that. Station 11, Tokyo Vice, the new Gossip Girl, a Dune series are all coming soon and I'm pretty sure all are HBOMax

Same for me, I watched the first episode of Raised by Wolves for free yesterday on YouTube but it’s not going to make me subscribe again.

That comment is accurate if you're referring to HBO as exclusively True Detective and Westworld, though the idea that Westworld had a good first season is highly debatable (I'd just say wrong).

Who's calling the first season of Got the best?

General consensus is that shows like Veep, GoT, Silicon Valley, Insecure, and The Deuce all got better. Same for older shows like Enlightened and Bored to Death.

Many people think shows like Barry and Succession improved in their second seasons.

This same type of complaining about the network happened in the late 2000s, once shows like Sopranos, deadwood, and six feet under were finished. Only so many of the current dramas have had a second season, and a ton of the programming is young.

Lovecraft Country, I May Destroy You, His Dark Materials, Righteous Gemstones, Perry Mason, and the previously mentioned shows returning soon (and maybe Euphoria; it was a hit, but I have no interest) don't make me feel like HBO has lost a ton of quality or credibility. I like everything on my list more than boardwalk empire or the final 2 seasons of six feet under, for instance. I like most things more than crap like true blood.

How about shows created in the last 10-15 years?

The Leftovers.

That show got better after season 1.

Is the third day any good?

I'm not usually big on the supernatural stuff, but the first episode has my attention. Jude Law is strong, and some of the islanders are interesting.

I read that the first 3 (of 6) episodes focus on the Jude Law character, then the next ones shift focus to other characters. Not sure if it all comes together in the end.

It's set in Osea Island, which is a real island of the coast of England that is accessible by a road that goes under water twice a day. You have to wait for the tide to get in or out. It has an interesting history, and some of it is worked into the show.

I liked the first episode of 3rd Day

HBO has some very good shows right now but it’s natural with the expansion of streaming in the past 5-8 years the pool has been diluted so of course it’s not going to be like the 90s/2000s.

Netflix and Amazon are money whipping everyone. HBO will be fine

Like others have said

Succession
Perry Mason
Barry
Big Little Lies
Gemstones

All are fantastic

Chernobyl was excellent, I saw it on HBO Now via Roku, but cancelled after a month of no HBO Max. I'll resubscribe when HBO Max gets on Roku, as HBO Max will have double the content of regular HBO, with lots of movies including great selections from Criterion Collection.

I thought 3rd Day was interesting too. I'll keep watching.
In defense of Game of Thrones, I thought the Battle of Winterfell was very well done in Season 8.
